Sickening.Pure...sugar..diabetes.. and a fair amount of cringe.
The dirty little secret of shoujos - this series is. If naivety, pretty boys, and truly wholesome energy is what you need, boy this is the drug-- I mean series for you. It's been awhile since I've read any wholesomely pure series, but this easily tops all romance series when it comes to only pure clouds and sparkly romance. It's the tweeny- middle school love of a dork and a supposedly dark edgelord of the demon world. The plot isn't new. Steal a human girl's soul/virginity and you become a greater demon-- except 110% your target is a bit ... ditzy and honestly the most angelic that any girl can be. Yup. That's it. That's the story line. It has zero room for risque.

If that alone hasn't turned you away yet, then you'll probably enjoy it. Because Shion is a best boy that's really trying his best. And that's maybe the reason why you're here - to discover a true best boy.

I always try to be fair in reviews and to also include the good times when saying a manga is bad. And this manga was pretty good until chapter ~15. Read it, 100% do it, but then just stop, do it for yourself- love yourself.

A TLDR after chapter 15: It is like some dude invades your home, flirts with your wife, she enjoys it and lets it happen and at one point even forgets you are there while embracing the stranger (chapter 20-23) and suddenly he is known as the husband by everyone while you are the shitty-gag punchingbag. It is cringe.

Up until the ... mentioned decline in quality, there really is not much to complain about. The dynamics are great, the characters consistent and everything has a purpose. The pace is so incredibly good and development just happens at the right moment.

But. suddenly. The whole manga went 100% south. First off- the rating. Story, characters and enjoyment are all a solid 3 after the "twist". Before easily a strong 8, it now lost everything it had going in ~4 chapters.

The characters took the worst hit. Our main character is the only one to not be changed to push lame, overdone run off the mill shoujo progress- the only explainable cause being that the author has no freash ideas anymore. The rest of the cast is thrown in the dirt. It is even worse than what I make it sound like. I will elaborate on the two characters ruining the manga- as already mentioned this manga is 1% story and all about characters and their interactions and development.

The heroine is the biggest problem. Properly done, with a nice, consistent character and human feelings, she now was turned into a dumb, hot-dudes-loving, unloyal shoujo-babe. It is gruesome. After the 2nd male got introduced, her character failed horribly. All developments, feelings, character etc. were deleted and her actions are weird and different- it is a different and worse version. She suddenly let the stranger touch her as much as he wants, loses herself in his eyes all the time, ignores ML, and even talks shit about ML while flirting with the stranger. All that after she knew 2nd dude for ~2-3 days. Chapter 20-23 have to be the worst manga chapters in history- I wanted to slap the heroine after every panel. Her behaviour is now disgusting and she doesn't deserve ML, who is doing ALL the work, but this is now a 100% youtube tutorial shoujo, so fk it, I guess.

The 2nd male is the average "I don't know you, but I saw you and love you and will destroy all your relationships and make you mine AND you WILL like it" manipulative-disgusting character. He came out of nowhere and has no proper purpose. Every. Single. Interaction. with the heroine is artificial and cringy. Anytime anything happens, it is to push another cliche misunderstanding, to push an uncalled for trope or to enable cringy touching with the heroine, who lets it all happen.


It sucks. It was so good. I am so sad. The author had something going and gave it up for easy chapters. This is Renai Gokko Sayokyoku all over again, I am in shambles.

The story sometimes fails to navigate the trappings of shoujo cliches properly, but I can forgive it because MC's expressions are absolute gold. The characters and plot might not be anything new (except that the boy is the protagonist for once) but the art just hits the comedic beats in all the right spots that it's hard not to smile sometimes. If you're looking for some tooth-rotting fluff that doesn't take anything too seriously then give this series a go.

Note: The 2nd ML subplot is the most frustrating one so far, but gets resolved fairly in my opinion. YMMV tho.
