"Get Married When You Grow Up!" is a slice of life/romcom that is, even at first glance, seems already different from the rest. But besides the intriguing idea of the novel, there is much more to be found within.
Amazing Characters -> The protagonist of the story, Chii-kun, is criminally optimistic high schooler and radiates positive energy that influences those around him. The second protagonist, Tomo-nee, is a kind-hearted and thoughtful senpai to who is admired by Chii-kun and those around her for her warm and caring presence. These two share an appreciation for one another in the darn most wholesome ways possible. Chii-kun's friends
...
and Tomo-nee's siblings were given a lot of presence for their character development, giving them a chance to have more depth in their varying personalities. All these make up for a cast consisting of memorable characters, building towards an immersive story that I would remember for the rest of my life.
Straightforward Story -> The pacing is consistent throughout the novel as with many slice-of-life anime out there, but what is great is that there are no unimportant sidelines that derail from the story. This is what a lot of romance shows fall victim to. There are basically no moments wasted on unnecessary easy-to-resolve-with-just-a-single-conversation misunderstanding. The story itself is unique, where the characters find the true meaning of love where it transcends the physical boundaries of life.
Beautiful Art -> The art is adorable. The manga artist(s) is well-versed in representing the most important emotion in romance (blushing) by diversifying the character's responses in accordance to the degree of the situation. The background work is top-notch and the character designs are visually pleasing to look at as they are all so beautifully drawn. The panels were fluid throughout the work and felt as if it was a storyboard written for an anime.
Spectacular Buildup -> The buildup that is created in every episode (2-3 chapters) is detailed yet so simple and easy to read. There's still unpredictability, which is important, and an element of comedy that sets the mood in a lighthearted while remaining impactful enough to deliver the message of the story to the reader.
If you're looking for an anime that will make your night as wholesome as possible; If you had a horrible day at work or school and just want to give up on feeling happy again; If you've felt like there's no chance in hell you're going to date that person you like because they're 'way out of your league', then this story will be the one to give you hope. Whether you have that 'special someone' or not, this story will be strong enough to make you want to start searching for that 'someone'.
9.6/10. I would totally re-read it again in a couple months from now, to experience the same emotions that evoked inside me from the first time. I've watched many wholesome shows and "Get Married When You Grow Up" is easily an S-tier in my list.
