Synopsis

Childhood friends Kakeru Ashiya and Yamato Oohara seem like they would never get along with each other. Kakeru is an amiable student who flunks all of his pop quizzes, and the handsome Yamato is capable of anything other than making friends. Kakeru pays a lot of attention to almost everything his friend does, but he is particularly interested in knowing why Yamato never acknowledges any of the numerous romantic confessions he often gets from girls. Thus, when they are alone in a classroom, Kakeru grabs the opportunity to ask Yamato his meddlesome questions.

Yamato gives him the vaguest of answers and, by impulse, almost lets out a declaration of love toward Kakeru. Although subtle, Kakeru knows deep down that it is a confession—but he stays in denial. Due to this unprecedented incident, Yamato, who has been secretly admiring Kakeru for quite some time, may never reach his heart.

The series has been published in English as I Cannot Reach You by Yen Press since March 9, 2021.

I am always on the hunt for queer mangas that are sweet and satisfying. And while more often than not I am left defeated by fetishizing, heteronormative, and fujoshi-ridden things to read, Kimi ni wa Todokanai was the light at the end of the tunnel for me.

It has everything there is to find in a slice-of-life BL manga, with a mix of humor and yearning for that best friend you are hesitant to admit your feelings to. Not only is the artwork extremely likable and cute, the story isn't a boring and slow one. Every chapter is exciting and you look forward to the next. I wish I could read Japanese for the raw chapters, because I could only find up to chapter 5 of English translation. Of course one of the main characters are dense, but it's so freaking cute. When I found this manga, I thought the artstyle wasn't to my taste because of the cover, but it seems it looks 10x better when it's not coloured! Listen. There is nothing objectively wrong with this story. It's the classic BL setup of a guy in love with his somewhat oblivious childhood friend and is scared of rejection. They're cute and enjoy spending time with each other. My problem is that it feels like I'm reading sort of messed up psychological horror.

There are a lot of moments in Kimi ni wa Todokanai that aren't filled with words. Silent pages, observational moments, mute introspection.
