One of these days, I’ll write a review that isn’t just me warning someone of something ahead of time. But now is not one of those times. I had the expectation of giving this manga a higher rating when it ended, but you can see that didnt pan out. Spoiler warning ahead.
The reason and my warning: If you are expecting a romance with a trans character, a WLW (women loving women) relationship on top of that, I am saving you the trouble of reading through this by saying Do Not Read This.
To say the least, I’m let down.
Which isn’t to say that there aren’t good

Finally, a manga that is upfront to address and question binary constructions. It doesn’t only break gender roles switching them like a typical gender bender, it goes beyond. It opens the possibility to identify with some things that society expects you to be/like, but at the same time not accept what is imposed and not fitting. Kanojo ni Naritai Kimi to Boku (Kanoboku) turns the classic question “Who I am?” to “Who I want to be?” and the message that stayed with me the most was: when the boxes available for you are too constricted, it’s ok to create new ones or even question the

I really love this manga so far. The pure representation, which is really quite progressive for a manga, made me cry real tears. We get to see every day joys and struggles for all kinds of people, especially a trans girl called Akira and her friend that supports her in any way she can. The outlook on simply just being human, in all different ways that there are, is wonderfully nuanced and understanding.
The story includes points of view of gay characters, trans characters, asexual/aromantic characters and generally just characters trying to find out who they are, how to identify and how to present themselves ... May 10, 2020
Really something I'm glad I read. There really seems to be a theme of self love and the manga conveys it in a really meaningful way. Learning to understand your feelings is complicated and fickle, but can't be put off forever without hurting yourself more. Even with some somewhat poorly translated sections, I really felt that it clearly conveyed this idea, rather than the classic manga writing trope where it feels like they try to make meaning out of something meaningless.
Started reading it and almost didn't realize that I finished it in an sitting. Genuinely things I think I will apply to myself after reading ... Apr 9, 2021
Love is an individual different experience for everyone. Sometimes your first loves aren't the ones that were meant to be no matter how passionately you experience them. Sometimes people don't experience romantic love ever, maybe love is something more than just friendship or romance.
Story 9/10 There were many things I really loved about this manga and my favorite being showing how there are many ways to experience love and finding yourself. I found it beautiful how they showed ways to discover gender, romance, and finding yourself as a teen isn't the easiest thing to do especially when you're lgbt. Characters 10/10 The characters were all ... Sep 6, 2021
*Spoilers* And yes the main characters do not end up together and I get how how people were disappointed with the lack of a wlw relationship between them. However, it is a sweet story and I believe gives visibility for many queer experiences and non-conventional views of love. I especially adore the character, Sensei Sasaki who is a canonical aroace and it's so rare to see aromantic characters in manga and media as a whole.
The art style is cute, I like how the characters tend to look like the shrimp from Sumiko Gurashi and it adds to the comedic tones. Short and sweet at only ... Sep 12, 2022
Sometimes all you really need is for something (or someone) to have its heart in the right place.
If I was to give this manga a purely critical review, then maybe it's score might be a little lower. It certainly doesn't have the most inspired plot beats, or the most brilliant dialogue. But what makes this manga work is in how thoroughly it explores its ideas across its relatively short length. The story centers around Akira's struggles as a newly out trans girl in high school, and it portrays her in an honest, realistic way. This alone is pretty rare for manga, but what makes it special ... Sep 17, 2019
This is the story of some not so typical teenagers in high school, dealing with love, friendship and cross-dressing. Below the fold are some spoilers, but the story is ongoing (ch.28) as I write so who knows how it may end?
Art: Very nice, effectively minimal at times, facial expressions are terrific. Story: Two teens who've been friends forever enter high-school. Angst and introspection follow. Akira (a boy) and Hime (a girl) have been friends for ages. The shy and gentle Akira is always being protected by the tomboy Hime who will beat the snot out of anyone who bullies him. On the first ... |
