Kanako Inuki, sometimes called the "Queen of Horror Manga", is a mangaka who debuted in 1987 with the one-shot "orusuban (house-sitting?)" in the magazine shoujo friend, within a special issue centered around horror manga legend kazuo umezu. she went on to create successful series such as Presents, School Zone, Bukita-kun, and the Mysterious Tatari-chan. her manga, which has often appeared in shoujo magazines, are well-known for her iconic, expressive artwork and is recommended for fans of junji ito, the aforementioned kazuo umezu, and maybe even hideshi hino.

this is a list taken from the english release of kanako inuki's collection Be Very Afraid of Kanako Inuki!

"this was one of the first series to do real research into spirits; the kind of logical, theoretical approach to its art style scared me at the time."

"it was about vampires, called 'vampire hunter' or something like that. and the story branched out into outer space at the end, but..."

I made this list because I'm tired of people generalizing shoujo and saying it's all romance, so here are some shoujo manga from varius genres (horror, psychological, action, drama, etc.) that are violent and dark! Check the trigger warnings for some of these.

A spooky-themed stack list featuring a variety of shoujo manga: from goofy otaku vampires to the creepiest twists on your favorite fairytales, you'll find the perfect shoujo thrill for your heart here!

— This stack is sorted alphabetically, and each item includes the reason it was picked, the level of spookiness (low, medium, or high), and the languages in which the titles are available.
— Since it's tough to track every single licensing update for manga, it's likely that I might have missed some for the titles in this stack. Feel free to let me know if that's the case!
— 'Level of Spookiness' is entirely subjective, and titles marked as *medium* or *high* may be revised later.

[⚠️ For items marked as *medium* or *high* in spookiness, it's highly recommended to check MangaUpdates or similar databases for specific trigger warnings. Please read at your own discretion.]

Horror manga with some combination of ancient religious beliefs versus the modern era, terror lurking in the country, fear of the spirits and gods, and often dangerous encounters between the outsiders and the isolated village. Due to the genre often being associated with Western horror, entries may not have all of these elements but will have most of them.

The genre is not to be confused with supernatural horror and is not wholly identical to "horror (usually supernatural) that is set in the countryside." However, the genre is fuzzy, so my interpretation may not wholly align with what someone else calls Folk Horror.

Just a list of Shojo and Josei manga that began publishing before 1990 that have been officially published in english, although some are Out of Print or from defunct digital publishers and thus are no longer legally available.

I can't seem to add this one, but Sign wa V!/The V Sign! (1969) was officially published as well (https://myanimelist.net/manga/125803/Sign_wa_V)

This one isn't in the MyAnimeList database, but Pairazahda/Pairazada (1984) is legally published and available digitally in english (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07757Y1X9?ref_=dbs_m_cmx_rwt_calw_tkin_0&storeType=ebooks)

(database entry: https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/yrzhtz5/pairazada)

Some Pre-1990s Shojo stories without database entries from Moto Hagio were published in the English Anthology "A Drunken Dream and Other Stories". These include Angel Mimic/Tenshi no Gitai (1984), Autumn Journey/Aki no Tabi (1971), and Girl on Porch with Puppy/Pochi de Shōjo ga Koinu to (1971). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Drunken_Dream_and_Other_Stories)

Himitsu no Akko-chan was published in Japan in a Bilingual English edition intended to be an english-learning aide to japanese people.

The Shojo stories Plus 1 (1986) and Purple (1985) from Ciao magazine were published in english in Animerica Extra's Short Program Volume 1 Anthology which was later released in its own collected volume in the US (https://myanimelist.net/manga/1443/Short_Program).

I tried to compile an extensive list of the English Licensed Shojo and Josei manga titles where romance is a sub-plot at best, if present at all (many of these don't have any romance present).
