Worldbuilding - "the process of constructing a world, originally an imaginary one, sometimes associated with a fictional universe." These kinds of manga are usually set in a fantasy and/or sci-fi world, and excel at establishing & showcasing the rules/history/economy of their fictional universe. List was created through collective data from multiple websites of people's answers as to what manga are considered to have great world building.

What definitely makes manga great would be that it goes over a broad range of themes/topics. Manga isn't afraid of addressing taboo topics, nor does it avoid concepts that most other entertainment mediums WOULDN'T DARE to touch. They also provide an imaginative exploration of how the Japanese perceive these topics. We rarely get cultural perspectives on certain topics.

Includes topics that are rare in animanga compared to other mediums.

Slice of life manga involving things like death, suicide, murder, depression, anxiety, paranoia, racism, survival, dark secrets(ex.cloning), loss/decline in/of civilisation etc.

I've included the fable and Kizudarake no Jinsei which aren't labelled as slice of life but they lie somewhere between gritty crime drama and a slice of life story.

Stories where a significant part of the plot (and/or humor) revolve around cultural differences. This clash can be between subcultures, real-world or fantasy nationalities, lifestyles, time periods, etc.

Manga/LNs featuring those who are always on the move or those who may be on a journey, with or without a particular destination. No isekai.

Mix of popular and less popular fantasy and isekai series

Main character and/or others have trouble with speaking or conversing.
This could be due to shyness, but also due to a problem with their voices or vocal cords, or another reason why communication is more difficult.

in the vein of both my anime interest stack 'hauntingly gorgeous' and my manga interest stack 'ephemerality' (where they might not quite fit in).

be warned, this list can include more bizarre and subversive works.

a collection of manga in which a primary character is a dog, transformed pet, half-wolf/half-dog, doglike kemonomimi, mythological canine posing as a human, or a werewolf. this stack will not include side characters; the relevant character must be either the protagonist or within the main cast.
