Okite Kudasai, Kusakabe-san is a delightfully lovely piece of media like you rarely get the chance to experience twice. And that's not to say it's anything special either. In fact, it is the very opposite of that: it's simple beyond comprehension. And sometimes, the simplest, most naive stories make for the nicest reads ; why should we look for complexity when all there is, is a lovable cutesy of a story?
Kusakabe, Saneomi's girlfriend, accepted the latter's declaration at one condition: he should have to bare with the fact she wouldn't want to get out of bed easily. And so this is the story of all
...
of Saneomi's attempts to drive her away from her confortable mattress and Duvet on the weekends they share together. Every chapter, he brings her something special new to entertain her and make her want to get up, as she plays with her natural adorable sleepiness to instead drive him under the sheets with her. As expected, he hardly can resist the temptation and ends asleep in her arms at the end of each chapter.
What attracted me personally was the adorable and comfy artstyle presented to me at first sight. What made me stay was their chemistry and idealistic relationship based on nothing more than a ludicrous promise, but a relationship both of them enjoy more than any human in real life could. It's fun! Kusakabe-san is easily excited by everything she witnesses, getting overjoyed over a threat letter her boyfriend wrote especially for her, while Saneomi tries to resist temptation through the whole day, ultimately giving up each time. The comedy is also top notched.
And it's not naive either. Both of them secretly want to have "physical interactions under the sheets", if you see what I mean, with each other but don't really know how to propose it to one another, or how to really do it to begin with. This manga doesn't treat it dirtily or with vulgarity however, instead it turns this lewd subject into a source of cute comedy, something I don't think has ever been done before. Additionally, It isn't cliché nor is it repetitive in spite of its premise.
Anywho, this manga is a genre on its own, a short experience anyone and everyone can more than certainly enjoy. My only complaint would be the ending. I'm not going to spoil much, but we could see the mangaka was caught off guard and didn't actually intend to end it so soon, resulting in a rushed and quite conveluted conclusion. Imagine all the fun we could have had had this continued for a few more chapters! But regardless, this is a treat. One doesn't need to be a romance fan to enjoy this feel good story about an adorably odd couple doing their thing, and I guarantee, you won't regret giving it a try.
