Another Monster: The Investigative Report is practically a recap in the form of a novel. Now don’t go away yet thought, because it might be the best way to do a recap I’ve seen so far.
You see, it’s a sort of fictional documentary… a report, as the title suggests. We get to follow a reporter who is trying to investigate the horrifying Johan case in fear that there might be another monster like him. Through this investigation he meets and interviews many of the characters from the original storyline of Monster.
This is the way the story is recapped, through the characters giving interview about
...
what happens. This is also why it works so well, as this way you don’t feel like you’re re-reading the same thing but rather reading a new one, even if you’re already familiar with most of the plot. And I say most, because another benefit here is that not only it adds another subplot about the other monster, you also get info about what the characters are doing now, later after the conclusion of the original storyline.
A well done way to refresh your memory of the plotline elements while also adding extra info makes this a worthy read if you’re a fan of Monster, which I’m sure plenty of people are. Of course, you should not read this if you’re not familiar with the parent story, be it the manga or the anime, but that should be obvious.
