Yokahama-eki SF is a sci-fi whose premise sounds a bit weird and unusual. A station which is trying to gobble up all of Japan, sounds like someone's fever dream right? But this is the actual premise. The station has somehow gained sentience and is now starting to replicate itself to cover Japan. The story focuses on our protagonist, who has been given a task by a now expelled resident of the station, to reach a certain place inside the station.
Now starting about it, the worldbuilding, despite being scarce, was well thought out considering its abnormal premise, but I wouldn't say it was good. While there
...
were various things told to the readers about the station's structure and origins and the state of the world due to the catastrophe here and there as we progress reading, there just wasn't much visual material to support on the claim of good worldbuilding. I swear I could have read a few more of just our protagonist going on an adventure exploring the station.
Now moving onto the next point and the art was just phenomenal, right on point. Its visual storytelling is definitely something which you can consider worth looking forward to. There are several pages where the dialogues are kept at minimum and you are allowed to soak in the world through the drawings, although as prior mentioned, had there been more of it, it would have really elevated this manga into new heights in terms of art and storytelling.
Now onto the story and despite having a weird enough premise, the story itself is not that grand or interesting. The aspect which I enjoyed was rather the survival and adventurous aspect of the story and not the story itself. Had it been a survival manga, things would have been a lot different, but it is not. Although it does deliver on the Sci-Fi aspect which it promises on.
Also the writing of the story starts to dawdle somewhere in the middle as it abruptly changes the perspective of the story to a scientist as the main character. The change was solely done as to introduce us to the world which had not been covered by the station yet. The thing is this story does nothing as to bringing the change to the existing one. The only connecting thread between the two main protagonist was established in the last minute as one of them is saved by the other. This part also tries to introduce us into some vague politics but fails in that aspect too.
About the ending and I found it somewhat lacking too. The ending as grand as the one we see in the manga has little to no build up. It sadly fell flat. Its like you set out to beat up a B rank monster to end up defeating the demon lord with a single strike.
While despite various inconsistencies regarding the writing aspect of the story, its not like the manga as a whole was downright awful, it was still very much enjoyable. I do recommend you to give this one a read.
