[This is only a preliminary review based on the first volume, this just came out in France and felt it would be nice to give some thoughts for those interested in the license.]
As isekais are becoming more and more popular to the point where they became a genre in and of itself, it isn’t surprising to see big names getting their own isekai spin-off, it makes even more sense when we see how editors seek to revive their famous license of the golden age, be it dragon ball, kenshin or saint seiya. from the renowned weekly shonen jump that influenced a whole generation of readers to get its own isekai spin off.
The story begins with a 40 years old single woman who is fan of city hunter and considers it to be the best manga in the world and is constantly fantasizing on ryo saeba. After a few pages, she falls under a train and awakes in the 80s in Shinjuku, having regained her 18 years old self appearance.
Deprived of her home and of her family, she is guided to the xyz board where she meets ryo saeba who decides to take her in.
So basically, it would seem that city hunter rebirth takes the same stories as the original except our main character is here to add her grain of salt and change how it would go… except not really.
The first volume focuses on the story of when miki tries to kill ryo in order to marry umibouzu, leading to the iconic graveyard fight. The heroine will intervene trying to warn ryo that miki wants to kill him or an instance where her presence makes miki realizes that ryo put blank bullets in her gun, but despite that, events remain unaltered and they continue like they would in the manga.
One point that is clear is that this spin-off is very faithful to the designs and to the personality of the characters, the same antics and gimmicks are to be found here: the mokkori, the crow, the hammer, umibouzu being afraid of cats, it’s consistent and that’s at least a positive.
My biggest issue with it is that we keep having the impression to read a story we have already read, as I mentioned it’s the same story, it doesn’t offer anything new. One other flaw is that the main character is more obnoxious than anything, she is only a pathetic attempt of a fangirl and she feels not really fitting with the rest of the cast.
To finish this review I’d like to say that city hunter rebirth is not necessarily that bad, there’s far worse out there but pointless and uninspired would sum it up.
I’ll try to update this review if ever I decide to buy the next volume but that’s it for now.
