Read the prequel, not the story.
The prequel alone is a 10/10. It's short, sweet, and legitimately took my breath away. The art is just simple enough to play up the story without being distracting, but there are certain points where it does shine. One of the chapter covers of the main story actually shows this off pretty well too. The story is short, sweet, and bittersweet. Anything longer than one chapter of that would probably be a bit heavy on the grimdark, but it's just enough for a oneshot. The characters are exactly as developed as they should be for that length, and I'm honestly
...
in love with all of them. One of the best one-chapter oneshots I've read.
As for the actual story, it's not great. The POV character is completely out of place in the rest of the story. It feels like the POV character is in one story and the rest of the characters are in another, which just comes off as him worrying about his little crush while all the other characters have actual plotlines. He feels like a comic relief piece taken out of a high school romance and thrown into an entirely different genre without changing anything about him. If you can read around him it's halfway decent, but since the plot hinges on the romance aspect, there isn't much of a resolution unless you care about his romance. Carve around him and you get a decent story (hence, the great prequel).
I quite literally wrote this review because I can't rate the prequel separately from the rest of the story, and I want to acknowledge that it deserves so, so much better.
