I've been asked pretty frequently to recommend something, so I've created this stack.
This is my personal opinion on what's "a hidden gem". I think some of these considered "mildly" popular? If you read a lot of manga, you probably know some of these. I hope you do, haha.

Everything here I've either read or reading atm. None of those have an anime adapatation (OVAs and live-actions don't count).

I tend to like series with these criteria to them, so here's a list of them. Feel free to give me recs of stuff to add!

Beautiful. No more words needed

Here is a list of mangas that should appeal to old farts like me, who are too old to find fun in shonen characters getting stronger, cliché fantasy or in vanilla school romance tropes.
The main drive is that the manga should have some personality, with decent and properly written characters, laid-back humor, an interesting context and / or a subtle story. Good art and page layout are also appreciated. No violence porn or excessive fan service either, I like authors to focus on something else than these simple devices, although I'm not against them at very small doses when they serve the story. The manga may have been adapted in anime or not, I only address the mangas here.
There are probably some spoilers in my comments so skip them if you're worried about that.

Whether it be beautiful, sad, cruel or happy, these titles follow a character across multiple years of their life, observing them being slowly shaped into... something.

This "something" can be a cruel end, a fiery goal achieved, a promise fulfilled, or a love finally found - a metamorphosis of a lifetime.

I tried to add as many different flavors of a "metamorphosis" as I could - from disturbing, to sweet, to heartbreaking, to inspiring and many more.

There are some entries where "childhood friend" is a bit loose (aka, middle/high school friends and together later as adults). I prefer the long-term best friend types, as well as the ones where, even though it was a short time, they made a lasting impact on the other.
