I found this manga while looking up any that dealt with shot put and discus. I've thrown shot put and discus since I was 9 years old and even competed in state competitions in high school, so I know my stuff when it comes to this sport. I'm gonna review this manga on both it's actual story side and it's accuracy to shot put. Bear with me, I'm not the best reviewer, but I had to give this one a review given that there isn't one yet and I'm probably the most knowledgeable person about shot put that's read it.
Story - Let's deal with the
...
rest of the story first, aside from the shot put stuff. I will say that the first 10 chapters were rough to get through. If it wasn't for my love for shot put I'd of likely dropped the manga at that point, but I kept reading. Thankfully, after the 10 chapters the story does start to pick up quite a bit. I found myself actually enjoying it for all the non shot-put stuff too. The humor was surprisingly good at points as well, something I wasn't expecting at all. I was really expecting the humor to be cringe.
Characters - When initially introduced to our MC, I really didn't think I would like him, but he started to grow on me a lot. Yuizaki on the other hand, she's just adorable all around. I really wished they'd of explored her character more cause I really liked her even without knowing anything. She could of been a top tier waifu if they had. As for the rest of the characters, the one's that they actually explored the backstories of I really liked. I thought they did them really well.
Art - The art was pretty good all around. Not anything to write home about, but it got the job done and I can't say I have any complaints about it.
SHOT PUT STUFF: Alright, let's get into this part. If I was rating this manga on shot put accuracy alone I'd give it a solid 9/10, maybe even a 10/10. From the standing throws to the shuffle/glide throws to the spin throw, they were all done perfectly. The ONLY issue I ever found was Yuizaki was bringing her leg down in a slightly incorrect way in one of the throws she did, but that's like a SUPER technical detail so I won't harp on it.
I also love how they made mention of the fact that Shot Put is not all about strength, which is a very common misconception. I was a twig in highschool. I was pretty much always the thinnest guy that was throwing shot but I was also the one who placed #1 the majority of the time (50' 2" is my record). I was beating out so many big guys that were confused how a twig like me was throwing so far. It's cause I had really good form, speed and explosive power. Don't get me wrong, strength definitely is a factor that you need. Even with the best form in the world you'll only be able to throw so far, you need strength to push it past that point. The manga demonstrates that factor beautifully.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Cons:
- No backstory given for Yuizaki and how she found her love for Shot Put
- Ending felt rushed and was inconclusive, leaving us on essentially a cliffhanger
- A romance happens out of nowhere and feels forced in just to give characters a push
- Not one mention of Discus is the entire manga. An absolute DISGRACE!!!
Pros:
- Fanservice wasn't nearly as egregious as I was expecting with the art style (it's definitely there though)
- Shot put explanations were very accurate
- Some of the side characters were done really well
- Main romance was done surprisingly well
Overall: If you're a fan of shot put than I'd highly recommend giving this a read. If you're a fan of romance and have no interest in shot put, then...there's definitely better options out there, but I would say give it a chance! Like I said, the beginning was pretty slow so don't write it off immediately. If you don't start liking it after the 10 chapter point than it's probably not your cup of tea.
