According to a press conference held by the Japanese government in Tokyo, "Akira" director Katsuhiro Otomo will be awarded the Medal of Honor with a purple ribbon for his contribution to the field of anime and manga. The purple ribbon is awarded to individuals who have made significant achievements in the fields of academia and art. This is the first time since 1998 (when Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata received it) that a member of the anime industry is conferred with this award.

Crypton Future Media President Hiroyuki Itou, the figurative father of Hatsune Miku, will also be awarded a Medal of Honor. His will carry a blue ribbon to commemorate the virtual idol's immense achievements in the areas of public welfare and public service. The software created a worldwide boom by allowing anyone with a computer to create songs with the vocaloid.

I can understand the Akira director as Akira's a very influential anime, but what did Vocaloid do besides create a bunch of crappy songs to deserve an award handed out by the Japanese government?

Created a boom of people using vocaloid software. And became a worlwide recognizable mascot who probably does commercials and PSAs and stuff like that as they said "immense achievements in the areas of public welfare and public service". I believe she's even pained on some trains and China has ripped off her image(that's how you know she's famous).

I think Oda should get this next or go ahead and make him a living national treasure.

Vocaloid has done a lot for the music and art, not only in Japan, but in all the world, you sir may have a beautiful voice with a range of 6 octaves, but us who cannot sing, (not to mention that we can't even sing like a woman) can adopt Vocaloid as our "voice".

Well, That is one of the reasons, getting to the point, you say that the songs are crappy, but the songs are not only the vocaloid singing....

It's important to note that Vocaloid wasn't created by Crypton Future Media...however, I'm sure Hatsune Miku greatly helped the popularity of Vocaloid and spurred a lot of creativity in the field of music. I know some people don't like Vocaloid or Hatsune Miku, but I think it would be hard to deny the positives that came from them.

Of course, Miku was one of the responsibles to power up the spreading of the program, and since on the present, there are an infinity of projects and songs going around because or by the use of Vocaloid. It's obvious that even if you dislike the music or the voice of the vocaloids, denying how big and influencing Miku is in the japanese subculture is kinda impossible.

I offer congratulations to both of them.

But damn, there are a lot of Miku haters here. I've been to one of her live concerts, and I can't help but feel it was one of the most inspirational things I've ever experienced. I actually think Vocaloids can sing very well, and the fact that you can hear the emotion in their voices is pretty neat, especially when you consider the fact that they are just software.

Thanks, person who gave me this on another site a long time ago, lol.

With vocaloid, song producers were able to produce magnificent pieces in way they couldn't before for the Japanese world of art. Miku is just one of these programs. It's weird how haters some people don't seem to understand the influence of vocaloid.

Gratz to them, but I think that the title of the award is kinda... misleading.

Usually, when I hear Medal of Honor, I'd reckon that it is given to those who give their life in combat... like sacrifice their life in combat. If I go by that logic, these dudes would be dead?

Haven't watched Akira due to the awfully detailed, gory content, but it probably deserves the prize as it did awake recognizion of anime to some of the older inhabitants here in the west.

Miku deserves it 100% though.

So many Vocaloid haters here lol

I suspect many of the people here who claim to dislike Vocaloid songs have only heard the stereotypical "annoying" sounding ones. Vocaloid isn't a genre, it's a medium in which to create music. Ironically, that's the exact same misconception people tend to have about anime.

Anyways, both awards are well-deserved, so congrats to the recipients.

You may find Akira vastly overrated, but nobody can deny the vast influence it had, both domestically and overseas, and this is what can't be overrated.

Anyway, the count of "ribbons" awarded this year:

Red Ribbon: 2 (saving life)
Green Ribbon: 30 (volunteerism)
Yellow Ribbon: 262 (dedication to cause)
Purple Ribbon: 16 (contribution from the fields of arts, culture, sports or academic studies)
Blue Ribbon: 485 (achievements in work of public interest)

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Grats to both of them, but I think Katsuhiro definitely deserved it more, considering how long hes been making manga and anime. I highly suggest checking out the Akira manga, it's much more well-rounded and gives the characters move development as well as his other manga (I just started Legend of Mother Sarah recently, great stuff).
