Have you come across an anime or a manga which is set in an Arab country or include Arab characters or based on an Arabic novel? If you did, then please feel free to share them with us in this topic.

What do you think about Japanese portrayal of Arabs in anime and manga?

I think the most notable example that comes to my mind is the Arabasta arc in one piece and this (arab country) is in a conflict fueled by an outer orgnization

I cant think of anything else at the moment

lol wat?! hmm from the 104 or so episodes that i watched i just can't seem to remember where they gave clues abt iraq!!

and ofc there are. As IMA mentioned one piece's arabasta arc, Sindbad (remember the arabic one?) In gundam 00 the main character (who happens to be the main fag!) is Kurd from azadistan. ofc there's no azadistan but there is kurd and they live in iraq-syria-iran-and turkey.

hmm Sunabozu has lots of stuff that are taken from the arab world (lol like sand!)
manga i havent watched many so cant tell. good that someone started a topic

Regarding your last question, last year we had Makoto Shinkai the director and writer of 5 cm/ sec and other famous movies coming to my uni. He admitted that the japanese have "not the best pic about arabs". (who does?)

I agree with what Itsmee said. Japanese's portrayal of Arabs is built on stereotypes and nothing more sadly. They always portray Arabs as rich womanizers who all they care about is money and power which is wrong. I wish they include more down to earth and everyday Arab characters in their anime and manga.

Yeah they still think we live in tents and use camels for personal transportation
and (as it seems) all the arab women dress like belly dancers

Another stereotype I dislike is that all Arabs wear the traditional custom for gulf countries.

There's a Moroccan guy in the Cowboy Bebop movie, if anyone's watched it. I think his name was Rachid (written the Morrocan way). The set environment was quite stereotypical, but I liked that they incorporated actual Moroccan dialect (I think? =P).

The Japanese blindly follow American stereotyping. *shakes head*

There are 22 Arab countries. Of the 22 countries, only 8 countries wear the traditional outfit of the Arab peninsula.

Has anyone of you heard the background music in the 6th episode of Phantom in the end? It had lyrics which says يا ليل يا ليل

At the top of my head, there's El-Hazard, which takes place mostly in a fantastic Arabian setting. Another fantasy anime is an old OVA called Rance Sabaku no Gaurdian. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure had an Arab character, I believe. Yu-Gi-Oh has an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh as a main character and a bunch of other characters from Egypt, does that count? While not exactly a manga, the fantasy Korean comic Ragnarok features Arab characters as assassins, of whom Loki is a member.

Of course, an obvious one is also Time Trouble Tondekeman, which was dubbed in Arabic as Rehlat Anaba. I'm surprised no one mentioned this yet, unless most people here are too young to have watched it back in the day...

El-Hazard? I'll make sure to check it out.
I did see the Time Machine or re7lat 3annaba but I want animes with Arab characters/settings as a main focus and not side characters or side stories.
Ancient egyptians don't count because technically, they're not Arabs.
Arabs are Semits and Ancient Egyptians weren't. Semits are Hebrews and Arabs.

We can only dream, Rebs, but even if, miraculously, an Arab main character materializes, he'd be drowning in the usual stereotypes. Take it as a blessing in disguise- we have enough horribly disfigured portraits painted of us as it is, without our dear Anime jumping on the bandwagon.

True. I'd rather they make an anime with an accurate portrayal of Arabs and Arabic culture than make another one filled of stereotypes. For me, accuracy also determines the quality of an anime besides animation and sound. I can't stand watching an anime with inaccurate info about any subject.

Heh, speaking of Arab settings, I just recently downloaded a Lupin III movie called 'Sweet Lost Night', and skimmed through the movie for an idea of the story. And as you might have guessed, it features treasure, an 'Arabian' desert, and of course, the usual portrayal of Arabs. Heh. Please, Japan, it wouldn't kill you to do some God-damned research. Bloody hell. >:(

Rarely I've watched or read a manga with accuarte historical/scientific facts in it.
In Power Hetalia, Chopin is made Austrian when he's Polish.

Eh? Where did they say Chopin is Austrian? I think you're confusing Austria himself (the bespectacled brunette) for Chopin. :P

Hetalia is quite accurate in most cases, I should think.

LOL! I thought when the narrator said Austria was obsessed with their music and Chopin he meant by that that Chopin was Austrain but he didn't.
I like it so far.
It is accuarte indeed.

[Tower of Druaga - The Aegis of Uruk] and [Tower of Druaga - The Sword of Uruk] are set in Iraq, in the Uruk Dynasty of Sumer Empire (P.S Ancient Sumer now is divided into 3 provinces Basra, Dhi Qar and Maysan).

This anime is not related to real events but many Ancient Iraqi names are mentioned in this Anime such like our Sumerian King Gilgamesh. Druaga The Demon of the Underworld and Anu the Sky God (Sumerian mythology), among others.

I will watch it later if I have the time :)

There is Avdol, a very iconic character.

It would be great if we had more titles in arabic settings tbh
