Studio Colorido, a relatively new studio started in 2011, has made two original short anime, "Shashinkan" and "Hinata no Aoshigure", which will be released in theaters on November 9th. There was also a pre-release screening event held at Cine Livre Ikekuburo on October 13th.

"Shashinkan" is 17 minutes long and is directed by Nakamura Takashi, who is best known as the animation director of the movie "Akira" and later, the director of the movie "Palme no Ki". In addition to directing, Nakamura also handles the screenplay and key animation. Most of the main staff previously worked together on the anime movie "Steamboy", with Kimura Shinji as Art Director and Satoh Mitsuhiro as Cinematographer.

Synopsis of "Shashinkan":
The story takes place before WWII at a photo studio on top of a hill. Many people visit this studio to have their photos taken. One day, a couple comes, but the wife is so shy that she always lowers her head. The owner of the studio tries all kinds of tricks to get her to smile and eventually succeeds. One year later, the couple comes again, but this time they bring their daughter along. She always looks grumpy, and again, the owner has to try everything to get her to smile. Thus starts a long-running relationship between the girl and the owner, and time passes to years and then decades...

"Hinata no Aoshigure" is 18 minutes long and is directed by the young animator Ishida Hiroyasu. He is best known for his debut work, the 2-minute short anime "Fumiko no Kokuhaku" which he made with four friends when he was still in university, received over 2.6 million hits on YouTube, and won the Best Animation Award in the YouTube Video Awards Japan 2009. "Hinata no Aoshigure" is his first work on an anime movie. The seiyuu cast includes Inami Anju as Hinata and Hayami Saori as Shigure.

Synopsis of "Hinata no Aoshigure":
Hinata is very good at drawing and falls in love with his classmate, Shigure; however, Hinata is not good at talking to people, so he keeps his feelings in his imagination and drawings. Then, Shigure's family decides to move to another town. On the day of their move, Hinata says to himself, "I must tell her my feelings!" and starts to chase after the train which is taking Shigure away.

Shashinkan & Hinata no Aoshigure on MAL

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

How can they do the plot of Shashinkan justice in 17 minutes? Sounds to me like it will be too rushed to be enjoyable.

Ishida Hiroyasu's directing something 18 minutes? Oh my, I'm excited. I hope he gets to direct full series in the future, because he's really creative and great compared to the majority that are active.

Short anime is like short story in literature. There are approaches that only shorts can achieve and a short can still cover long period of time if done well (think the first few minutes in the cartoon "Up"). It is just that one should never judge a short by the same criteria as a long movie.

You'd be surprised how much you can fit in 15 minutes and still have a good story on your hands.

Don't get me wrong. I like short stories, and short anime etc.

But there are some ideas that work better in that format than others, and that one sounds like it could be done a lot better if it was about twice that length.
