WOW!!!! So, the pacing was definitely rushed. Characters all spit out their lines one millisecond after the next and it feels weird and artificial. No one has time to think about what's being said. It almost ruined how cool the river styx was, if it had more time it could have been really chilling but we blasted past it on a lightening fast pace. The voices are different now. The animation has visibly dropped. Presentation wise and pacing wise this was a rocky first episode.
But despite that, I loved it. I really did. I wish it was better and specifically less rushed, but what was there was really fun. It all started with that glorious opening which to me said we're finally going to lighten the tone after that horrifyingly grim arc we just had. The opening starts dark and bleak but the saints break in shining in color and the music changes to a hopeful tune. Saint Seiya openings and endings have always been immaculate at transcribing the tone of what's going on and to have the saints break into the literally hopeless underworld like the "leave your hope behind" sign implied, full of glistening hope and heroism, that was a good way to start in the opening itself. :)
Eighth sense still feels a little perplexing but it representing just a new, more interesting level up system for the saints to push themselves to reach and ignite their cosmos to new levels or whatever makes it fine with me already. It seems literally doing a suicide jump into hell is enough to awaken it, to brazenly die for Athena. Likewise, Athena herself and Shaka(maybe just Shaka if Athena always had hers) seemed to awaken theirs through accepting death. There's a definitely a theme here and it's already interesting in that way. I wonder if they won't actually ignite to the eighth sense... So far, it's very interesting and in tone with the way cosmos normally works and I'm all for it.
So the groups are as follows, Seiya & Shun, Hyoga & Shiryu, Athena & Shaka, Dohko, and Kanon. All landed separately and will fight from probably different spots on the map all the way to Hades. We'll see who makes it, this is an exciting way to kick the arc off. Gold saints and Athena on the frontline is great. With Pandora telling Hades 8 saints arrived it got me thinking, Athena isn't a saint and if you count the others there is only 7 saints. Is Ikki here? Let's find out! ;)
Even though the pacing seemed to lessen the impact of the river styx I am grateful we still got an awesome 3-dimensional first antagonist. Charon really won me over. He is definitely a grimy guy and he showed himself to be working for the money, not for Hades but for his own reasons. With money he would go against Hades command and guide living people across the river. But, he wasn't a good person by any means. This made their dynamic when he was singing dead souls tunes while sailing his enemies across the river despite going against Hades orders quite charming. I was wondering if they'd become comrades of some kind. He only became more interesting when he had a mini character arc. He first saw that Shun gave him a very personal belonging to avoid fighting, then later he saw that he saved him from drowning and trusted in an enemy. Finally even when he attempted to kill Seiya and choke Shun, Shun's eyes were not of hatred, or depravity, they were peaceful, he still wanted to trust Charon. This moved him so much that he gave him the pendent back and guided them to shore without any more fighting. Charon is a man who delivers the cruel and depraved across the river, he's used to the most awful people coming through here. It makes total sense he would act the way he did, he doesn't respect or trust the people here, so having someone kind, compassionate, and peaceful trust him, it really moved him to the core. Yet, his grimy nature still wanted to fight Seiya because he didn't see those things in him. I hope Seiya didn't kill Charon because I'd like to see him come back, this time as a friend.
The underworld is looking a lot like past arcs battlefields but with more depth and diversity. It's not just pillars, or temples they have to go to, it looks like they'll have to traverse some confusing and dangerous land. The prisons do look a lot like temples though, hehe.
Despite the presentation issues, I thought this was a strong first episode! |
