I agree, this show is fantastic. I've been introducing it to some of my friends, trying to spread the word you know. The music is fantastic, btw.

I would have to agree!

I definitely thought that Tsukikage was being too mean... but once you realise that she was basically doing it to get Maya to really see how it felt to be really angry at someone because she thinks they're being unfair, you can actually see why Tsukikage was being like that~. [I'm talking about the part where she was slapping Maya while Maya was delivering lines about someone getting unfair treatment.]

The whole thing with shutting her in the shed seemed extreme too, but eh... Maya was being extreme herself by being all "I never want to act again!". If watching the opponent's performance doesn't motivate you to do better yourself, then don't watch. D:

Anyway. Great episode! Can't wait to see the final version of the play -- with Maya, not Ayumi. :D

Hmm Tsukikage has a point, Ayumi's definitely the closest to the original Midori but it isn't necessarily better since she's basically just following a set path and there's no room to improvise. Maya on the other hand is creating a whole new Midori, one that nobody has ever seen before. Still, I think Maya's training was too harsh and brutal.

That was a bit over the top, but can't say I disliked it. I'm already invested after all.

Pretty sure that's abuse.

What competition puts a director of a competing troupe on any overseeing committee? One that wants to create DRAMA apparently.

So, uh, how did they take care of their "business" during those 5 days? Does that shack have a toilet in it? What about food and water? Did they take some lunch breaks now and then (while the dramatic music abruptly stops with a record scratch sound) and immediately go back to screaming at each other through the door? I could understand one, even two days, but how the fuck did they survive doing that shit non-stop for 5 whole days? That's physiologically impossible, even with the power of autism on their side.

Tsukikage takes acting super serious. I get she wants to mold Maya into a greater actress, and has high expectations for her, but that harsh treatment is unnecessary. Yhoo! Those slaps and isolations are too much, at this point I too believe it's abuse.

Can't wait to see the showdown though.

Tsukikage is absolutely psychotic. The way she treated Maya throughout this episode is the definition of abuse. I understand the need for Maya to cool her head and calm down, but locking her in a freezing shed without warm clothes, food, bed, and a bathroom is BEYOND cruel.
And as much as Tsukikage harps on about the importance of an actress's face, she certainly doesn't mind causing physical damage to Maya's face!

I understand why no one takes action against Tsukikage for her treatment of Maya, but it's nevertheless painful to watch it occur.

Nothing to do but go forward. I want to see Maya succeed, but it feels wrong to watch her future be held in the hands of a mental patient.

What is this shit, I just watched a 14 year-old get the shit beat out of her and then get locked the acting shed for five days by genderbent Captain Harlock.
My suspension of disbelief is rapidly disappearing and at this point the misadventures of Mrs. Child abuse are just so ridiculous it's almost funny.

gosh dang Tsukikage's the one who preached about how "an actress' face is her everything", so why is she hitting Maya's face like that? I don't care if it was to get Maya to act angry as the character she's playing, that's like how circus people used to/still whip their animals to do tricks. Agh this is so frustrating to watch even if Maya is okay with that kind of intense practice. I just know for sure that Tsukikage is some kind of psycho tho đź’€

Totally corrupt practices, letting a competing troupe member decide on the schedules. Yet it seems realistic, as it's common that in culture & the arts there are a few influential people who get to show favouritism.

I don't like the trope of an abusive coach, though I know it's somewhat rooted in reality. Such people do exist, but the problem with the trope is that it's almost always presented as if that makes the artist (or athletes, as this is common in sports anime too) eventually better. It gives the message that the end justifies the means. While such things do create drama for the series, it's hard to watch Maya being locked in the cold shed or struck repeatedly. Most likely such treatment would just traumatize her and snuff out her motivation for good, and if it doesn't, that's not a positive outcome of the abuse, but rather happens despite it.

I am a big fan of this show. But Tsukikage is an abuser. You can achieve fantastic results without resorting to abusive tactics. I accept that it's part of her character to be abusive, but I just kind of see it as someone writing a story through their own lense. I don't get the sense that the writer wanted to write a story without abuse, for whatever reason. And people can grow from abuse, just like they can grow from support. It's just that one leaves trauma and emotional distress, while the other one helps and lifts one's spirits.

If anyone gets the impression that you should excuse abuse from this show, I would like them to reconsider and look for alternative answers. They're available. Google "mentoring healthy" or "mentoring acting abuse" and alternatives that go in healthy or abusive directions. This series sometimes straight up glorifies abuse through "if they hadn't done this they wouldn't have reached those heights" which... yeeeeh... no, they just didn't know another answer. Maybe the same is true for the author, maybe not. I just don't want anyone coming away from this show and feel like they SHOULD abuse people to teach them lessons.
