Can it stand alone as a film or would it be better for me to watch the episodes beforehand?
I'd rather just watch the film, but if the episodes are kinda important for the plot then I will watch the episodes as well.

You'll definitely have to watch the series first to understand what's going on.

I didn't understand it even after having watched the Fafner series not so long ago.

The ending theme by Angela was great though.

Stand alone? Absolutely not. If one was to watch this without having seen the TV series one would be 100% lost. This movie makes no sense unless you know what Festum is, what Fafner is, who Tsubaki is, who Soushi is, what assimilation is, what Mir is, etc....
