Simple visual imagery tells a lot

I really loved the flashback from the first scene where the reporters were asking classic stupid questions to the naval officer whether they've killed a man etc. Nice touch there as it heightens up the impact of killing 8 people just to save yourself.
I don't know why people write that they are approachable persons,
if you were you wouldn't be on MAL.

Extended families or lovers on MAL are a farce.

There is so much exploration into the thinking of WWII Japanese military leaders.
What could have been a simple and boring story of reliving history has instead become fraught with so many variables and the devil is in the details.
The crew of the Mirai are showing their lack of battle experience. It almost proved fatal for them. The tension is almost unbearable. To break out in a sweat from watching this anime... testifies to the masterpiece that is Zipang.

this episode was pure kino. finally a hand combat scene.
only the sound of rain and gunfire.

also tsuda's near suicide, another insanely powerful moment for the series.

absolutely superb directing on Kasuhiro's part, he truly has created a work of art with this.

boob to the rescue

This ep is phenomenal... The negotiations between Mirai and Yamato is successful, the battleship is now leaving the area and so will Mirai after they've picked up the landing forces. However, one resolution does not mee that the war is over, because it very much is not.

A simple slip up leads to a total confrontation to a squad full of US marines, underneath the overcast sky, shrouded in the darkness of a jungle at night, the storm rages on s the rain pours upon the 12 men on this firefight. It's a down and dirty close quarter combat, no overarching dialogue, no sense of negotiation, they're just fighting for their lives. And the Mirai crews manage to overcome this obstacle despite their lack of war experience. They've now bloodied their hands with the lives of 8 young men who unknowingly came across them. Yosuke himself knew of the atrocity he has committed, including strangling a man to death, damn, he's a strong soldier, not just physically, but also mentally, to accept his immediate result and admit to doing what he did is easier said than done.

The CQC combat is all done so well, aside from the obviously monotonic and gloomy rainy atmosphere, Zipang so far has used various dramatic and suspense-oriented OST to go along with the action, but this time, the only OST is the white noise of the rain hitting the grounds to go along with the gunshots and screams of the men. Not to mention the atmosphere itself, by having us look at the situation through the eyes of Yanagi, we got a POV where he's left behind and is struggling to keep up. It gives the scene that much more feeling of desperation and when he comes across the marines, the suspense is through the roof!

I wonder if Yanagi is supposed to be a dig at war nerds. He knew the most about the war off the top of his head in previous episodes, but here he deals with the real thing very badly. He gets psyched out just when they're trying to move through the jungle and leave, blunders into danger, and freaks out and starts shooting in panic. Afterward the others risk themselves to save him he has a very shallow and selfish reaction to the combat, in contrast to Yusuke.

And he's fat.
