I have a serious question relating to the plot of Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon (A Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere), that I would very much appreciate if someone could explain.

What the eff is even happening?

I don't get the plot. Seriously. I'm on like episode 6 and I honestly have no idea what is even going on anymore. Is there like a prequel series I missed that explains everything or something? I don't know if maybe it's badly put together or I'm just particularly dense, but it's driving me nuts.

Here you go. Just look through the Q&A and FAQs for each episode/season that your own. It helps... a lot.

Kyoukai Senjou is quite complex and it might be a bit hard for those who don't read the novels to get the gist of all that's going on. I recommend reading this retrospective of the first 6 episodes:
http://randomc.net/2012/06/30/kyoukai-senjou-no-horizon-retrospective-part-1-the-premise-the-world-episodes-01-06/

It also explains some of the backstory of the world and the premise.

The kind where you do need some sort explanation and info to fill in the blanks, the HUGE blanks. Same reason why I recommended the anime to SAO. Both barely explain he minor details. You'll find yourself confused throughout both because of how they're adapted.

The series itself is doing very well in Japan if you didn't know, at least from what I've seen/heard.

Episodes 8-9 should make the plot clear if you are still confused. Ending ties it together. It gives the answers if you watch all of it. The important thing is to pay attention. You need to note this,

Pfff. It's not the anime which needs a guide, it's the people who are too dumb to understand it.

You aren't supposed to get the "plot". You watch it for the PLOT.
As a child, I was told that society is a melting pot of talents; knowledge and experience combined to form important alloys that will contribute to mankind. When I got to highschool, however, I thought that it's more like a river in which the water represents our peers while we ourselves are the stones in the river. Constant erosion by mindless majority sheeping has made us lose our unique edge. After I hit the age of 18, I realized that I've been wrong all along. Society is no melting pot. Society is no river. Society is a person, a very skilled rapist, and he has fucked us all.

If you're getting lost watching this you should try watching Darker than Black. Only anime I have been thoroughly confused as to what, and more importantly why, things were happening in the show.

MAL is the dark underbelly of the anime community. While other naive fanboys and fangirls run around in real life forming clubs and squealing in deafening high pitch noises about their favourite animus, we remain here, meticulously dismantling the credibility of each and every show, until all that remains is a steaming pile of tropes and ass pulls which we then devour to gratiyfy our glutinous and masochistic desires.

i was a little confused but understood after a while.

been so much anime running by since i saw it. something about those students being in charge of politics. people do a lot of debates n stuff. there are still rulers/kings etc. people have to reenact history for 1 reason or another - example - there was a famous battle and the nations had to redo it and the winners have to be the same as in history. the place they live is a giant floating ship. they try to become some independent nation instead of being controlled by that 1 larger nation.

that president kid is actually in love with that doll because she's like the girl who died which he knew when he was a little kid.

there were some interesting people in there like Tadakatsu Honda who is actually based on a famous samurai who is 1 of my favorites from history.

"Tadakatsu is often referred to as "The Warrior who surpassed Death itself" because he never once suffered a significant wound, despite being the veteran of over 100 battles by the end of his life, and because he was never defeated by another samurai."

i had fun watching it =)
NEETs (No Employment Education Training) are the least desirable people anybody would want to hire and yet they are the first choice to become moderators/admins around the internet. They have yet to have established a sense of responsibility or role in society and many are plain leeches (with minor exceptions). They are given "authority" to police sections of the internet with the powers of The Judge, Jury, and Executioner. Isn't that weird?

No but seriously, while some plot aspects can be hard to understand, it doesn't make it shitty. Horizon doesn't need a "guide" or "faq" for people to understand its story though there are things explained in-depth in that infodump someone linked earlier.

Infodump + Stilt's retrospective should only be looked at for either some background stuff, or if you can't be bothered to give your full attention to the dialogue (or rewatch eps).
Oh and I guess, if you don't know or like history that much.

On it's initial airing I still didn't see what was so hard about understanding it. They give you freaking timestamps throughout the show. It was obvious to notice that EP 2-4 were all in the same day just from different viewpoints of some characters. Plus Kyoukaisen is not a story that you can probably get from seeing only a fraction of it. Heck it's original source material isn't even half way done yet. But that's a different topic. The dialogue is key to the series, it really gives away the motives of many of the characters.

The only fault may be the fact that it's a bit of a spiritual(?) successor to the author's previous work Owari no Chronicle. It does use (or borrow?) some concepts I believe. Plus Kyoukaisen does have beings/races that aren't just humans. Since in Owari, there were other worlds residing in different dimensions with their own races. So it's sort of a nod there for the previous fans to see that the story that had concluded before is sort of referenced. Since there was hostilities between beings of different worlds/dimensions. But that's not the big point...

The plot is fairly simple, but at the same time complex with the world + setting (and everything else) that the author has brought in. It's simply: Save Horizon ---> reclaim her emotions --> save the world from literally ending due to a unknown phenomenon.

If you'd rather it be something more simple like only a cast of 5 people vs an organization, go watch something else. This is a literal world-wide scale series, hence all the characters.

Kyoukaisen was the rumored "IMPOSSIBLE" to adapt LN series. The 1st 3 eps were definitely something difficult to adapt as noted by the staff themselves. Yet the staffed pulled through (well Kawakami did help a shit ton for free). Yet now...after S1 + S2 is over, the sunrise staff don't regret it, they freaking fell in love with the series. Especially FukuJun. Becoming a LN reader(falling in love series wwww) to help out his fellow seiyuu's get the atmosphere of a scene right? God damn. (then there's the fact for ep 12, he redid the whole confession speech, because "lol I was behind a half breath at a part or 2, lemme redo.") IMO the fans of Kyoukaisen in Japan were greatly rewarded with an LN adaption like this, it started out a bit rough, but damn did it do well for finishing S1.

Regardless, whether you like it or not, or understand it, that can be your choice / loss.

If you do hate it, you can never deny this though - Kyoukaisen, has one of the most diverse / best OSTS in the past year or 2. Seriously... almost 100 tracks for 2, 1 cour series. Something like that isn't usually done...

Bit of a short post imo, but don't have that much time nowadays to go a bit more into depth..
