THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

I just started a 70's marathon; first I watched an episode of Umi no Triton, then I watched an episode of Devliman, and now I watched an episode of this. This was so much prettier, it's unbelievable it came out in the same decade! This is why Osamu Dezaki (the director) is a hero. Even Lupin III, which came out the same year and was directed by motherfucking Hayao Miyazaki, doesn't look this good. All the multi-plane animation, all that detailed linework, those wonderful camera angles, those vibrant colors, ahh!

Oh, and the story was pretty good too.

Yeah, the visuals totally blew me away, especially the artwork and backgrounds. Very colorful, particularly for an old cel animation show. And the cover being in B/W made it all the more surprising. Not sure if I'd say the animation is that much better than other shows of that time period, but the artwork sure impressed me.
Some of my favorite shots:

The story started out happy but similar to WMT shows it didn't last long. It was a fairly fast-paced episode overall (thinking back on how long the introduction phase took in Marco), but if that means the travel parts start earlier and last longer I'm all for it.
The return of the father was definitely far from the positive moment Remi hoped for. These old children's books are always so cruel to their protagonist :(.
I probably regret this post by now.

Pretty good first episode, solid story and the animation is smooth considering it's from the 70s but damn the cliffhanger at the end nearly killed me lol...

This show looks really beautiful in HD, they really did a great job with the BD remaster. Keeping in mind that this is not only a TV show, but a TV show from 70s, and the backgrounds are just gorgeous. The parallax scrolling looks so good in Ie Naki Ko. Had to check who did the backgrounds and turns out the guy worked for Ghibli later on. Guy deserves every credit, he was great.

It's obvious from start that this will be a ride full of feels, so by the end of the episode you already expect the worst to start happening.

Caught some episodes when it was on TV here ages ago, but this'll be the first time I'll be watching it from start to finish.

it almost feels like anybody could have shown up and they would have thought it was daddy. i thought it was a thief at first. same with the guy asking for money for the lawsuit, i thought it was a scammer and that the father was dead all along.

i was thinking that maybe the person who showed up at their house was a criminal or a thief looking for a place to stay, i mean how could the wife not recognize her own husband? tf is that? and their personalities seem way different, i'm surprised a gentle woman like her would want to marry a guy who resembles a pirate on land. he didn't recognize his son either. strange.

The animation is absolutely stunning!

Right of the bat with the melodrama lol

I've seen the girl version of Ie Naki Ko, but it looks like this one is the real deal. Good start.

The visual direction is unbelievable. The painted backgrounds are to die for. Pure talent. Nothing like this exists today, its a dead art form.

Fair first episode. Wasn't really for the heavy use of parallax scrolling, especially where it kinda just looked off. Also this shot which I get is supposed to simulate a nodal pan (Camera circling around a subject)... looks really weird without the edges cropped fully, and looks even weirder with the whole cel stitched back into one frame.

Wonder how strange it must've been to draw this shot in the first place? Still, a solid first episode.
