Posting a new topic instead of just searching since I might accidentally run into spoilers.

I'm in the same boat as you. I haven't watched the original series either. (Except for watching the OVA's to try to catch myself up to speed a little.)
I don't think it's 100% nessicary...Evol is great fun on it's own and is slowly piecing together what it needs to on it's own so far.

But most of the enjoyment of speculation and theories comes from having watched the first series.Evol also references the other series, in some ways subtle. If you don't know the previous characters, then the discussions will be confusing to try to follow. There is a heavy theme of reincarnation, so having knowledge of the first series really helps.

I just read up in the main story/legend, the characters, watched the OVA's. I also watched the very last episode of Aquarion.
So far I've been able to piece together enough to understand/enjoy what is going on.
That being said, I would like to watch the original series sometime too (even thought I've already spoiled the ending fo rmyself).

I think if you don't watch the first series, you'll have to do some footwork on your own and research the first series characters on the wikipedia or something. But I highly suggest Evol. I really love it so far! :)

I personally watched the prequel before watching EVOL. It gives you a lot more background on the story as well as makes you crave for what's going on in EVOL. Try watching the OVA as well if you can - it's a story in a parallel universe so the story's a little different and a bit more interesting. Sousei kinda contains a lot of unnecessary episodes - which don't link to the next episode. Its worth the watch, I loved it :D

the way i see it; it's like watching Terminator 2 before watching T1.

Yes, T2 is 10 x better than T1 but the 1st movie has backstory that you need to know.

This is the same as Aquarion. Yes, you can watch the 2nd season but your missing out on backstory from S1.

I must warn you though; Season 1 has low ratings and i thought it was (for lack of a better word) TERRIBLE! So don't have high expectations for S1 but remember; doesn't matter how shit S1 is because S2 will rock your socks off XD

Its so damn hard to watch the prequel , the mirrors are little and the buffer speed are slow . And not all web have this anime in their list. Its very limited . So, its just too damn hard to watch the prequel, its not popular .

If you live in the US or Canada, you can watch it "legally" on youtube or FUNimation.com. I watched the first 2 episodes of EVOL but went back to watch Genesis because I was kinda confuse and if you watch Genesis, you can join in to guess the "who" is "who".
