The beginning was a little stale, and the characters typical, but the survival aspect was interesting.

I have to wonder how much legitimate respect Keaton has for odd traditions. It's possible he learns how to emulate legends and give culturally-appropriate greetings specifically to garner favor. The way he speaks about things is certainly detached enough; however, he does seem to get worked up about the destruction of historical artifacts. Perhaps he simply likes all potential tools to be available, and is annoyed in the way a programmer would be if you needlessly deleted an old software that was worth studying.

watched it two weeks ago. A decent ep, but not very compelling.
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

>I've spent 4 days in the desert with no water, digging holes, making myself shoes out of rats, and I can still take you all.
Keaton, you're so hardcore.

I didn't feel any closure from ending.
Even when I was in crowd, I was always alone

A decent episode, the Shiekh looked so creepy with those eyes.

Master Taichi Keaton on the other hand, is still a pro, speaking Turkic and shit.

A straightforward, but very pleasant episode. The two Uighur heads' obsession with Sadiq's legend came across as somewhat artificial. The old professor was a little typically unpleasant and uncooperative - but I suppose we've all come to expect this sort of simple 'antagonist' with this series.
I was looking forward to seeing Keaton show off his spear-throwing skills, but the way it's ended is perhaps a lot more admirable - for both sides.

The setting is a little saddening though, as it brings to mind the current problems between the Uighurs and the Chinese govt.

Hmm, that's an interesting thought. To me, I think Keaton is depicted as very sincere in his interest and curiosity. His respect is shown in his detachment - he doesn't seem to hold a particularly ethnocentric or purely academic interest - but rather, his archaeological and multicultural bent reflects a genuine interest in all manner of human things.

Unless his goofy and amicable manner is wholly a facade of a fearsome ex-SAS operative. Perhaps the slightly differing portrayals of Keaton's 'combat' and danger-savvy competency (that seems to vary between settings) is in some part a consequence of a split between the main authors - Urasawa and Katsushika.
That's just an unsubstantiated hypothesis of mine though.

I like this series, but the way it starts with silence... then that MASSIVE SCREACHING BAGPIPE BLAST is absolutely brutal. I watched a few eps with headphones, and never again.

It screwed with me to the point where I added "vol" to the file names for episodes I haven't watched, to remind me to start watching with the volume turned right down, then turn it up a few seconds into the OP.

wished it could end with little more closure otherwise pretty nice episode that certainly strange way to start a new season. Its being a while watched the first (TV) season and maybe feels like the plot felt very differently unique or darker given that it was released on OVA format.

lmao that fucking professor.... so painful to see silly, petty man-childs with the 'professor' title!! and goddamn grey hair *le sigh
the whole survival experience was a bit over the top but it was pleasant to watch Keaton's iron willpower, unwavering composure and will to survive no matter what. reminded me of London's "Love of life"

p.s. op's perception of Keaton is... unusual. i thought his character at this point was out of allegations like that. but well whatever
see you, space cowperson . . .

I really dislike the habit this series has of trying to make Keaton look good by contrasting him against an idiot like the professor in this episode.
