I have never met a bartender like him, ever. But I also haven't been to that many bars to do any sort of comparison, but still, I don't really think there are RL people like him who have that much passion & dedication for the job.

And lol @ this anime saying alcohol has a soul. I don't really know what to think about that. But this is a good line which I'm going to try on the next bartender I see, "what I want to drink is a story that resonates my soul" and see how exactly they will react to it.

So anyway, has anyone ever met a bartender like him?

Every bartender I've ever encountered was a sleazy ass. Tis true.

Wish I could of had Tom Cruise serve me a cocktail in the 80's.

The premise of this anime is awesome though, so many great ideas and concepts at play, the idea of a bartender having a ethos to stick to, and one as noble as soothing people's souls over a bar, haha, genius!

I'm really not one to speak as I've never actually been in a bar (nothing against them, I'm just poor and don't happen to be someone who drinks), but I don't think there are many people left in this world with that sort of passion and dedication... perhaps there never were.

However, as I hear from friends, there is a tremendous difference in the attitude of drinking in Japan. Here in western societies, alcohol is primarily used as a way to achieve intoxication, whether it be a light buzz or to become completely "wasted." In Japan, though it may effectively serve the same purpose, drinking is supposed to be a more sophisticated activity, one intended to relax you.

As for the "soul" issue, you have probably noticed that traditional Japanese beliefs seem to be that all things have souls, and those that accompany one's walk of life are particularly important. The knife of a chef, the weapon of a soldier, the crops of a farmer... and these don't just limit themselves to Japan, either. The ships of sailors, the pens of authors, the cities of societies... all these things are in some way perceived as having souls even today. If you come at it from that angle, it's not necessarily such an odd idea... it may even be natural.

I agree that this series is conceptually awesome... it's sad that so few seem to be able to appreciate it (then again, the typical age of a MAL user seems to be 13-15, which is definitely not the target demographic of this show). I took my time in watching it, but this was a great anime.

Well then, I really need to get myself over to Japan. The bars here are no where in comparison to what it sounds like how it is in Japan.

They're rowdy, people have intentions of drinking to get drunk, they are crowded, messy and it's not even close to being classy whatsoever. And because of this, I will never go to a bar in my town again.

I remember one time meeting a bartender who was roughly in her 60's, and she looked like she'd have the qualities that Ryuu did, and yet, she was drunk on the spot while serving me my the alcohol. Actually, most bartenders I've ever met were slightly intoxicated while serving me. My friend even took shots with a bartender once. If I remember correctly, you can get your smart serve license taken away for this. Lol Northern American bartenders.

Still have yet to meet a bartender like him. And I've met many, many bartenders since these older posts. Swear to god I'm going to be a bartender one day and put as much passion into the job as Ryuu did.

Lol @ me thinking about Ryuu every time I go out to the bar. Fuck.

Of course there are no RL bartenders like Ryuu. They aren't paid enough to be that good. He's an idealization of perfect service: classy, knowledgeable, empathetic, and an uncanny ability to read people's hearts. I would doubt the existence of many people like that in the world, no matter the passion or profession.

But that doesn't stop Bartender from being a great series. While on the surface, a bartender solving life's problems with alcohol might seem cheesy and unrealistic, but the deeper themes present are as relatable and human as can be.

Half the bars here don't even do cocktails. They say it takes too much time when it's busy. And I love cocktails =/

Really aren't good bartenders then. Hate when I go to the bar and ask for a cocktail, and somehow end up with a Rye and ale. I make cocktails all the time and surely would love to make cocktails for people at a bar. I don't know, I just really enjoy it.

I found a unique bar like in this anime in cologne, germany. Its called "barfly". The bartender is not so cool like Ryuu, but very old and funnya and you can get there all cocktails (1000+) or all other alcohol.

Ryuu looks almost EXACTLY like an older Azuma Kazuma. It's almost scary.

I started watching this anime when I was 15 and got hooked merely on Ryuu's personality. XD I don't know because I'm obviously still underaged, but I'm sure there aren't any bartenders like him anyway because even in the anime he was a legend. That's why he was called Glass of the Gods. He was perfect even for that world, so of course there's no one like him.

I don't drink and never will, but I'd probably go to a bar every night if I got to talk to someone like him. XD

I have met someone like him, although not exactly. I have to say I love him a lot and really do want to find a bar like that.

When I was in Japan, many bars i went to looked liked the one in Eden Hall, and the bartenders are actually that friendly and helpfull. I wish here in Canada I could say the same but they are few and far between.
