Tenchi Universe was probably my favorite out of the Tenchi series.
Tenchi in Love,Manatsu no Eve, and Tenchi in Love 2 (aka Tenchi Forever!) all go along with Tenchi Universe (Kiyone is in them).
You should watch them in the order I listed above.
Make a thread if you want to discuss any of them; I'd love to hear what you think. ^_^

I liked the way the OVA dealt with the introduction of the characters. Here Ryoko affection towards Tenshi was rather meh and also Washu is was more fun in the OVA been Ryoko's mom and all that.
I thought the ending was going to be more fun, but they decided to go all serious business and I was rather disappointed.
huh?

Overall it was a pretty fun show and aside from Ranma probably the only harem ill watch. All said and done I had quite a bit of laughs with this series and will more then likely check out more entries in the Tenchi franchise.

I dislike fake deaths and fake endings but when a show is this good you can easily forgive that sort of stuff. Only a sociopath would not be moved by that ending :D

Put a label on me all you want. I love the ending! This was one of my first anime's growing up. I think I like this one just slightly better than the OVA's with the exception of Season 1. I think I love Season 1 OVA and Universe the best

This was a really well executed last episode. I loved the character's epilogues (Washu goes back to making WMDs, of course!)

And circling back to that in media res from episode 1.

Ryoko had actual character development, she would never have helped rescue before, but in the end proved herself to be a really good girl.

Tenchi got the normal life he deserves, but what good is it?

I was honestly wondering if they were going to do a 'neutral' ending where he ended where he started; I feel it was a bit of a cheat to 'bring the carnival back' by bringing Ryoko back to life, and Mihoshi and Kiyone have no reason to return to Earth, but after Tenchi's depressing remembrances of things past I don't even care.

I think Tenchi Universe is not really a harem, but actually an isekai. Since only 2 out of 6 girls care about him, he's more the Chosen One for isekai reasons.

I like the organic technology in the anime, that is so organic it's literally all trees, it's a unique look.

I have to wonder how exotic Ayeka really looks to the Japanese viewer though, since to me, an American, Ayeka is exotic looking. Asian deisgn cues and customs are coded in Western science fiction as alien; for example the Minbari in Babylon 5. But there are very obvious Japanese design cues in Ayeka's outfits. The hood in one of her outfits is like Shinto wedding dress; I wonder what to make of it, since that would seem familiar rather than exotic to a Japanese I would think. It seems to me a Japanese would see Jurai as more like the Empire of Japan in space, just without the Westernization and fascism.

Incidentally, the Empire of Jurai actually seems incredibly terrible. Not only is it an empire that claims all planets in the Milky Way, but apparently other galaxies. And the worst thing is that since the Juraian royal family lives for a long fucking time, it means multiple generations of peasants are stuck with Empress Ayeka for centuries for better or worse.Of course, the agents of the Empire are the bad guys, but only because of internal power plays. Normally, one would expect the nature of such an antagonistic Empire to be on trial itself, but in Tenchi, the oppressive power structure is not the cause of conflict as much as internal divisions.

I'd actually kinda like a Tenchi Universe fact book that described the nitty gritty details of the Tenchi Universe - what race are Mihoshi and Kiyone? Are they the same race as Washu and Ayeka? What species is Ryoko, since she can phase in and out of matter while the others can't? Who signs Kiyone and Mihoshi's paychecks- Ayeka?

I feel like this anime set the standard for how rom/com and harem anime ends. Everything seems concluded and then we are suddenly back to square one.

This was a great re-watch. I like plot elements like this where in the ending all the characters get their "ending" and you know what happened to them after the smoke is cleared and dust is settled. &++ the thought of "Everyone has their own life to live" goes through my mind.

I just love that sonder feeling y'know. But for this it's anime characters lol. Which is actually a good thing because that means these characters actually have a personality and there are reasons to care 'bout 'em.~

Everyone was cleared of all charges of treason.

Tenchi's dad and grandpa are doing fine, and the latter didn't die. Washu was getting her props in academia before she was developing weapons of mass destruction lol. Kiyone and Mihoshi are still as tight as ever, and I'm soooo happy for Kiyone for having the career she wanted and being happy. YOU GO, GIRL!!! <3 Nagi is still looking for Ryoko. Ayeka was able to take her rightful place on the throne. Tenchi decided that the royal Jurai lifestyle isn't for him and went back to earth with his dad and gramps.

He's been living a normal life since (uhhhh, did the school just accept all his absences as excused? lmbo). But it looks like he does miss the eventful life he used to have with all the waifus and their shenanigans. It really did feel like a dream, didn't it?

Ohhhhhhh~ Ryoko is alive and back! Thank goodness! You had a fella going there, girl! It's nice that this felt like things came back full circle. Cleary remember that scene of Tenchi walking to school in the first episode!

Awwww, a tender moment between Tenchi and Ryoko to end this anime!

This time I decided to comment only on the final episode, usually I comment episode by episode, but this time I decided to comment everything on the last one, so here we go.
First I'll comment on the characters and their changes from this spin-off to the canonical story:
Ryouko – While in the original story it makes sense that she likes Tenchi, because she lived with him since he was born and nurtured a love, in this spin-off she just falls out of space and falls in love, in fact you can't even call it love since you can only understand this in the final episodes where she cries for him, before that it only seemed to be a tease for Aeka or something, considering that in an episode she simply leaves Tenchi hungry and goes to have fun in space, the Ryouko from the original series would never have done that. Another point to be mentioned is that in the original Ryouko is a monster of strength, being able to destroy the city and her plot was precisely that she was very strong to destroy the earth but did not do it because of the tenchi .

Washuu – They simply took away all her genius, in the original series Washuu is very intelligent and there is almost nothing she cannot do, it is almost like a divine intelligence, in this version she leaves a lot to be desired, she was very nerfed intellectually. Another bad point was taking away her connection as a mother with Ryouko and creator of Ryou-Ouki. Another point is that they took away her loving interaction with Tenchi.

Ryou-Ouki – Making her fall in love with another ship of the same species, but male was a shot in the foot, in the original series she likes Tenchi.

Tenchi – Tenchi is almost the same as the original series but has a problem which is the character's background, in the original series his power is much more explained and he is much stronger, he has more impact, in this he is just a jedi, they took away everything Tenchi's role.

Sasami – not much to comment on, it's basically the same character but I think they took her focus away from the series, in the original it's pretty clear that she liked Tenchi and she had more protagonism in this version it's more like she was a child common, not to mention that they severed the connection she had with the Tsunami.

Aeka – honestly for me Aeka's changes were the best, they removed the connection she had with Yosho, thus eliminating her loving interaction with Yosho, improving the character's plot, it was the only character that had an improvement because of the alterations, made her love for Tenchi genuine.

Mihoshi – This version took away the love she had for Tenchi and left her totally as a comic relief character, in the original it makes sense for her to stay with tenchi since she was assigned to the earth sector, in this it makes no sense for her to return to the land at the end.
Kiyone – I don't know much about the character, I know she came from the OVA “Tenchi Muyou!: Galaxy Police Mihoshi Space Adventure” but I still haven't had the courage to see it but I intend to watch it later after the main series is over, I even found the character interesting but it seems that she was underused, she was kind of thrown into the main cast, it seemed that she didn't have a space between the main characters, she didn't have a motivation.

That ends the part of the characters, the rest of the characters are not necessary to comment, basically all the changes they made to the characters made them worse with the exception of Aeka.

Now about the story, due to the content of the story, this much episode was not necessary, most episodes are very monotonous, I overlooked a lot because most of the anime is certainly more focused on Tenchi Muyo's comedy, that is, the anime is not it would have serious parts, it would just be a comedy anime with Tenchi's characters but towards the end the atmosphere of the anime changed completely, bordering on characters "dying", these final episodes were the highlight of the anime, it was possible to make an anime of 6 eps just focusing on the serious parts would make a much better anime.
The penultimate episode was even interesting in terms of the fight but it doesn't come close to the fight it had in the first season of the original series, and the final episode was very good for the drama part but otherwise all the other episodes were so-so.
As I said, these last episodes are even good but in general it's not worth watching all the other episodes to get to them, even because they don't have anything very interesting and don't complement the original series in any way, either for the romance or for some interesting new element, none of which was added.
Before all that, I think this series is at most an OK anime

Score: 6/10

Nota: 6/10
