| THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- The April issue of Bessatsu Shounen Magazine reached me yesterday, along with the 3rd volume of the Sankarea manga. Given the situation in Japan, it is likely that future purchases won’t come as speedily. (I’m already receiving notices of delays in the shipments of other pre-orders from Japan.) The April issue contains Sankarea chapter 16. It is the first story in the issue and in on pages 4–29. The first three pages are in full color. The first two pages are a spread of Rea and Darleen in cheerleader uniforms. Rae is wearing a red and white uniform with black thigh-highs, and Darleen is wearing a blue and white uniform with white knee-highs. They are both lying down and holding pompoms that match their uniforms. Interestingly, Volume 3 of the tankouban contains the same image but as a two and a half-page fold-out and the color scheme is different. In the tankouban they are wearing the same color uniforms – violet – and holding black pompoms. They are also on a bed in the tankouban, while they are against an indistinct violet background in the April issue. Volume 3 contains chapters 10-14. The front cover of Volume 3 is Rea in a green floral print top, with her left arm bandaged. The rear cover is Darleen and her owl. As with the previous volumes there is a little Mero omake. Chapter 16’s Japanese title is “A” or “Ah” (the hiragana). The English subtitle is “Return of the Living Dead 3”. The third color page, where the chapter starts, is a reprise of the end of the previous chapter. The chapter is short and is split between Chihiro and Darleen verbally probing each other for information, and Chihiro and Rea wandering off into the misty darkness while Rea tries to convey her feelings. The end of the chapter succeeds in being melancholy and horrific simultaneously. I’m definitely getting the feeling that there may well not be a truly happy ending to the story. |
