I had watched season 1 (1st cour) when it was airing, so 4 years ago, I decided to come back to this series by starting to watch episode 11 of season 1 part 1 but felt a little uneasy, so I decided to rewatch the anime from the start, which is something I never do anymore, I used to do it when I was much younger with Love Hina and Bleach.

Anyways, moving on I started watching it again from episode 1 and I was having a blast even though I pretty much remember everything shown thus far or moments where I think "oh yeah, that happened". The only issue I had is I thought the show was much more lewd and then came to horrifying realisation that crunchyroll only offers you the censored version (I understand why but it's a bit annoying as well), I'm now unsure if I had watched it censored or uncensored, I watched fansub versions of it when it was airing and in the past certain TV channels in Japan would air the uncensored version of an anime compared to other TV channels, I don't know if it was the case with this one.

Anyways, I got up to episode 6 last night and the plan for this week is to get up-to-date with the series as soon as possible.

what is the difference in the censored? I watched it on CR and I will rewatch it if I watched the censored version.

If you don’t know, the blu-ray version is uncensored (you can probably find it online) and the difference is mostly just more sexual things. During episode 1, it shows Paul, uh, fucking his wife, but on the tv version it’s censored and displays a black screen (still includes the sound though) Also, i noticed that there’s more fanservice and more skin is shown during some explicit scenes. Even though it’s not much of a difference, it’s still something.

this show isn't ok. people overhype it for being a story about Rudeus improving himself but it seems like he's just as perverted at the end of the second course of the first season as he was at the beginning. those who don't try to pass the story as a redemption arc rave about how good the worldbuilding is. that is a fairer point, but it doesn't redeem the show for me.

It's not even necessarily that the show is lewd that annoys me; it's that characters are openly lewd and nobody apart from ruijerd appears to care. another show that is really messed up is the monogatari series, but funnily enough, in that show women don't want the main character to be a creep towards them (generally). A lot of fanservice in monogatari is done as a weird joke in poor taste, whereas in mushoku tensei it's done as a character trait. The author must have been thinking:

"How do we make Rudeus different as a protagonist? I know! He'll carry around his teacher's underwear as a portable shrine!"

that's messed up. from what I hear, the second season isn't any better, but I haven't watched it so I might be wrong. still, why would you rewatch this series?

I agree with you, the fact that the author constantly tries to make the 'perverted side' of Rudeus seem normal is annoying, and from my point of view, it’s the worst part of the anime.
[SPOILER] By the end of it, he even gets a harem, as if that were a completely normal thing (I guess it’s typical for ecchi animes).

Kinda sad, because this makes the whole redemption arc, of him stopping being a creep and trying to become a better person, feel way less serious. It makes it seem like the reason he got better was just because he was reborn as an overpowered and attractive mage (I say “attractive” because every girl in the anime falls for him). Even though he’s still a pervert, now everyone just ignores it, as if it’s totally okay for him to act like that.

The worldbuilding, animation, soundtrack, everything is amazing, and because of that, I actually like this anime. Even the main character is well developed, he really grows through the things he learns in this new world. But the fan service the author insists on including takes away from the depth of the messages he’s trying to deliver.

it's important to note that the author of the series was trying to depict sexual things in a different way then most series would and rudues does develop a lot through the series, he becomes a much more normal person even just by season 1 part 2 and much more by season 2 and forward and as someone just starting the light novel rudeus does stay perverted but in a much more natural way.

@Zarutaku The first episode is censored, there's a scene there that got scrubed out in the censored version. At least 1 or 2 more in the first season. I'm still watching Season 1 part 2 (stuff I haven't seen before), so I have no idea what's been uncensored there as well as the rest of the series.

@siraqOrNoraq lol, you really aren't much of an anime fan are you? Censored doesn't just mean the absence of sexually explicity content, it can sometimes involve the complete absence of episodes because it's being deemed too dark. An example would be Cardcaptor Sakura.

Genuinely a lot of the responses here are disappointingly shallow.

@ThatRandomB I felt uncomfortable watching from season 1 part 2 after not following the series for 4 years. It was genuinely a really good time to watch it again, I absolutely love the show.

Are you aware of shows like Queen's Blade and Ikkitousen? Mushoku Tensei is incredibly tame compared to those. Most animes/mangas that have ecchi are usually there to cater to their demographic.

Like for example, Chihayafuru is a brilliant manga and anime, I'm pretty sure there is absolutely no ecchi in it because the series is a Josei. Kuroshitsuji is decent but can be a bit off-putting for some because the mangaka is deliberate in trying to sexualise the male characters somewhat and put innuendos that often go over people's heads but that show is also cherised by it's fans.

Basically, to each their own is what I'm saying.

@Zarutaku I'm not sure mate, I thought I had seen the uncensored version because I felt like they were airing the uncensored version when the show was out in Japan but on select channels.

It's true that in Blu-Ray editions tend to have a more complete uncensored version. I recommend just grabbing those if you can, I can't be asked with it as I'm not bothering with the uncensored version if it's only a few seconds being removed, as long as it's not altering the story or the lines the characters say, I can happily take a pass. Just a shame that crunchyroll do actively want the censored version be it reduced sexual tones or gore, I remember when crunchyroll was not a legit corporate site, a place where you could get links for J-Dramas, K-Dramas, Taiwanese dramas, anime, etc.
