Fot the same reason why Demon Slayer was awarded the best fantasy.

@Piromysl it took hours to explain to a friend that shangri-la is no isekai, and now this, I was just very confused if there is a way to consider this anime an isekai^^

@SNgKrv that is why I'm asking, so do you consider shangri-la as an isekai, because of the virtual experience given in another world?

If you consider sword art online as the beginning of isekai slop, then you could say SLF is too, but I would just consider it Fantasy since the IRL stuff matters in the story.

It is sci-fi, vrmmo. Not isekai since they are still on Earth experiencing a fake world.

I know many say the VMMORPG type anime are at least a subcategory of Isekai. They each share similar elements, but VMMORPG anime don’t have the whole reincarnation or rebirth aspect. So, that can justify why it is in Isekai. I wish No longer allowed in another world was nominated for best Isekai, but I am still down with it.

A 'standard' and hardlined usage of 'Isekai' would disqualify Shangri-la from being one. However, an open/liberal usage of isekai would allow it to be one because a VRMMORPG like Shangri-La frontier does not exist and would be an incredible technological achievement if it did. The vastness and greatness of Shangri-la (the game) makes its virtual world the closest thing to a realistically plausible 'other world' we humans can travel to and 'inhabit.'

So, VRMMORPG animes like Shangri-la and BOFURI are Isekai because there is no hard-rule (unless you want there to be) stating that an individual must be physically transported to another planet. In other words, the vast difference between the real, day-to-day, world we live in vs. playing an incredible super immersive video game practically makes Shangri-la an isekai experience for the Player.
