Is there anything to this show other than generic high school romcom hijinks?

I watched episode 1 today and found it to be absolutely unremarkable. Judging by the next few episode descriptions, it doesn't look like it's going to change.

It probably won't make a difference as to whether I will continue watching, but I'm still interested in hearing: does the show connect in any way to the usual Haruhi lore? Like Yuki finding out that she isn't human. Or is it all just played as a normal sol from start to finish? Spoilers are welcome.

Yes at the end of the season it's the whole plot point of the show it's why it's so different it's to point out the difference with the Haruhi universe. It's a slow burner just like the og Haruhi Suzumiya.
