The first half of the show is different from the second half. It’s a lot of building up to the French Revolution. If you can make it past the political cat fights with Marie Antoinette then you will be rewarded with a tragic love story and ending in the second half.

the first 2/3 are really good, but then something pretty crazy happens without any real consequences and completely ruins the "love story" being told in the second half imo. it's the only scene that doesn't age well about the anime

The early episodes are by far the weakest, but trust me, it really gets good later on.

Watched this last year on PlutoTV and while animation isn’t perfect you will fall in love with Lady Oscar!

keep up with it. the first half is decent but it continues to build very well and by the time you get to the ending you'll see that Rose of Versailles is incredible. amazing show

It’s not super dark. Just mildly dark.

Anyway, the show is more plot heavy later, but I don’t think there’s a point in watching it if you don’t care about the characters. Their little stories and drama make up most of the show.
