GANTZ is criminally underrated and needs another, faithful anime adaptation

So I just finished re-reading the manga and ... it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good.

I won't mention any spoilers, but it is such a great story. My top 3 anime/manga are:

- BERSERK
- Blame!
- GANTZ

Imo it is one of the few quintessential, super high quality stories that EVERYONE who wants to call himself a weeb needs to have seen.

Unfortunately, the anime ends way early and, honestly, messes up the presentation in a lot of places, so a reboot that tells the whole story from start to the end of the manga would be necessary.

New anime, a video game adaptation, bring it on. Kurono is one of the best heroes in fiction and my god, the girls are so hot. Reika <3.
If you haven't watched "Fantastic Children", don't talk about "best anime". Thank you.

Yeah dude 150%

It was my fave manga for a long time, it’s now my 2nd or equally fave.

It has its flaws but I love it so much.
I have all the single volumes it cost me like 2000 au hahaha.

The original anime is ok, I would love to see a good adaption from start to finish done online because on TV it would be censored.

gantz spawned an anime, few manga spinoffs, live action films, a 3dcg film and some games

surprised an anime reboot hasnt been announced yet. the rights for adaptation shouldve been reverted already back to oku/the publisher

i just hope they dont go for low framerate 3dcg stuff and animate it in 2d fashion for fuck's sake

@MyllerPhiem I completely agree with you, as it's unfair that a masterpiece like Gantz hasn't received the adaptation it deserves. However, I think it might be challenging since, the last time I checked, Warner held the adaptation rights and there were rumors of a potential live-action adaptation (hopefully, they've abandoned that idea).
That being said, if an anime adaptation were to happen (and I'm dreaming big), I'd love to see Trigger take the helm. Better yet, a collaboration between Trigger and GoHands would be incredible for adapting Gantz. While GoHands isn't particularly renowned, their distinctive 3D CGI style would suit Gantz perfectly.
Anyway, what do you think about, guys?

I've just recently watched Gantz for the first time and was pretty disappointed. I thought "THIS is what so many people have talked about?"

So yeah I would like to see a new, proper version.

It probably won't ever get one. I hate to be pessimistic, since it's also one of my favorite manga, but it's too old and not popular enough. Not only that, but it's also really violent and horny and it's alot harder to show stuff like that on Japanese TV nowadays compared to when the original adaptation was made. The only hope it has is if netflix decides to adapt it randomly like they sometimes do with other old manga (Pluto, 7 Seeds, etc.) and if you've seen both of those then you know how hit or miss the quality can be. Berserk on the other hand has more hope, as it's way more popular and also popular in the west. If I remember correctly, the producer behind castlevania said he'd love to do a berserk adaptation, which would again be netflix.

@ptero93 But that's the thing: Gantz is "realistic-horny", it's not fan-service (outside of the chapter covers, lol). Sex just happens, rape happens, horny guys happen, because that's what happens irl. It's not comparable to some ecchi-fanservice that adds nothing to the story. Gantz portrays real society and how shitty people are and that's, well, pretty accurate.

I would agree, though, that boobs are the biggest problem for a new adaptation. There's little giant boob monsters later on, lol.

I'd really love to see an anime adaptation of the full story, but I doubt it would ever get the green light considering some of the more problematic plot points.

Well, another would imply it's ever had a faithful anime adaptation, but...
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

It doesnt matter the intent, we'd have to get a heavily censored version either way. Just look at the modern jojo adaptation vs the original ova. The only way to see jojo uncensored is to buy the blu ray or watch the adult swim broadcast. Can you even think of the last time you saw uncensored nudity or hyperviolence in an anime?

I guess it is upon reflection, but it lacks that feel that old stuff like gantz or berserk has so I guess I just doesn't feel the same? idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@ptero93

"that feel" being good writing where the violence actually makese sense within the story and has consequences. Unlike something like Chainsaw Man which is also hyperviolent, even moreso than Gantz actually, but the violence is without consequence, because at the end of the day the heroes will just regenerate any wounds.

Yes, modern anime suck

"modern anime suck" is going a little far, but alot of older stories definitely have some x factor that many newer ones lack. Tbh I think chainsawman is a counterexample, even though the violence lacks that feel of older anime and manga it still doesn't feel like it nerfs or restrains itself the way many modern anime and manga do

Honestly? No. The anime improved the manga a lot for me, the ending of the anime was much better than the manga's.
