I enjoyed the live action movies a lot but haven’t seen the anime. If u have seen the movies, would you consider it a good adaptation? Is it as good as the anime?

I saw them a long time ago and I enjoyed the movies but I thought they covered different points in time completely unless I'm mistaken.
Edit: tried looking it up and I guess it's just a condensed version but tonally it felt different.

@someguy I originally thought they were a different story entirely from what I remembered but after looking it up it looks like it's just a condensed version of the manga with a big tonal shift from the anime. So I'm not sure how good it actually adapted the material.

@WestOnAndrewAve oh, makes sense. Even tho I haven’t seen or read the source material nothing really felt missing in the movie.

I find the OG anime superior, mostly because it fills the gaps that the films miss. The films are incredible and one of the few live action anime adaptations that are well crafted, but the Kyoto Arc in the anime is extremely well done and I would definitely not miss out on the trust and betrayal OVAs with the soundtrack or the original anime altogether. Skip everything after Kyoto Arc though, since the anime created garbage filler to fill out the rest of the episodes. Although, the live action films are mostly amazing because the Japanese are so well versed in making samurai films and really the best medium to see the characters come to life with amazing fight choreography.

@BlueMoonTornado the fight choreography in rurouni Kenshin is insane isn’t it?

@User476674 I’ve already seen all of them 😊. Mackenyu, Takeru Satoh and Kasumi Arimura are even some of my favourite actors now.

I've seen them more than I've read the manga and seen the anime. The action sequences are probably the best I've seen in film which seriously makes rewatch value so much higher.

I’ve heard some negative things about the author, is it true?

@Kanie_SeiyaXd You put the remake above the live actions? Yeah, sorry, i can't take you seriously.

Having seen the movies, watched both animes and read the manga, the live action movies are very good, but unfortunately not great adaptations. However, the new anime is very lacking in personality in comparison to the 90s series, so if you’re looking for the ideal adaptation I’d recommend starting with the original until the end of the Kyoto arc (and then going on to Trust & Betrayal).
