I’m sure the show evolves and becomes more than just guy wants to fuck high school girls but idk it’s just not a very funny dynamic for me. Ik there’s more to the show than that but I’ve heard that this is one of the shows where episode 1 is a good representation of how the rest of the show is and it just wasn’t for me.

I was just wondering if y’all think the same thing about the dynamic, if I should just try to stick with it for a little while and see if my feelings change. I really do wanna continue giving it a chance just because of how iconic it is but I already got like lots on my plate and I don’t really want to continue watching this if it’s just more like episode 1.

Edit:

Ok I’ve decided I probably will continue watching the show it’s just not gonna be as much as a priority for me as some other shows. But yeah I did enjoy the weird ways he helps solve students problems I just didn’t find it funny really. Also I will say I am watching the dub as I’m watching it on prime and it only has the dub, so idk if the sub is less creepy but the dub he definitely wants like a teenage wife and to hook up with teen girls lol. And I also understand it’s not what the shows about it just kinda gets under my skin as I’ve had friends that have had like creepy around onizuka age teachers in high school so it just reminds me that people like that exists and it makes me uncomfortable

i don't remember if he actually wanted to fuck teenage girls, i just remember he was very perverted and horny on the surface, but deep down he is a very kind nice person.

I had the exact same feeling, but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. I believe Onizuka stops the creeper stuff around episode 16 or so.

Of course it always depends on personal tastes, but I can tell you that GTO is one of my favorite anime ever. Give it a chance.

From what i remember he was "I "just" wanna see panties and lot of girls" etc. It was mixed with he's serious approach as a teacher to give young bastards some life lessons.

If I'm honest, he's definitely messed up in that regard but you see less and less of it as the show progresses.

I was put off by it at first aswell so I can relate to where your thoughts are at a little.

Are you like 5 min into ep. 1? Cuz it gets obvious pretty quickly that is not what the show is about, actually watching it i found it a lot LESS creepy than the synopsis lets on

Yes it is a raunchy comedy, it's gonna have said type of jokes all the way thru, and if that's not your thing fair enough, everyone has different taste, but the story has a surprising amount of depth to it

Also dude's in uni, it's not like he's some 30-40yo creeper old enough to be their dad

yeah it's definitely problematic and Onizuka is gross, but... it's also really funny and eventually lands on a wholesome note. Not a show I would recommend to normal western audiences tho.

I loved the show as a kid, but I tried watching some of this again a few years ago, and yikes… I really don’t think it’s aged well.

Onizuka swears off of trying to sleep with his underage students after ep 1, but the ick OP is describing doesn’t go away, as the principal being lecherous is a recurring gag, and all the girls are generally sexualized, like, all the time—which isn’t unique to this series by any means, but for a show about connecting with and respecting your students as human beings and the virtues of teaching etc., idk I would’ve expected better from this lol.

Onizuka’s slapstick antics don’t land for me either anymore, nor did I find him as a teacher believable in the slightest lol, even when considering that this is supposed to be a comedy. I think the nosebleed humor (as well as the art and animation—Jesus, the art and animation…) also just feel incredibly dated.

It’s kind of wild typing all this while remembering that I used to think Onizuka was this superhero teacher that we should all aspire to. The show is a product of its time, and for a certain demographic, I guess

I believe he literally says its one of the reasons he became a teacher. So he could fuck and ogle teenage girls. And in that one episode when his student came by his house? Yeah, he was ready to pork her

I sort of agree with you. That is why I prefer the underrated prequel Shonan Junai Gumi, which has less crude Onizuka antics and a more serious portrayal of sexual assault. The 1998 live-action version of GTO with Takashi Sorimachi also downplays his pervertedness (he's still somewhat perverted but the TV drama does not glorify that aspect of his personality).

Ehh... neither does the anime

It is a comedy, it does have that exagerated comical tone to it, but that does not equate to glorifying it

So you think the show makes you uncomfortable since Onizuka wants to do things with high school characters besides its a comedy but you love AoT which its literally a series about child soldiers and such underage characters being killed in the worst way and unlike GTO the show is supposed to be serious about it. What kind of logic is?

Also please don't bring up the "I’ve had friends that have had like creepy around onizuka age teachers in high school so it just reminds me that people like that exists and it makes me uncomfortable". If GTO was serious in the first place, Onizuki won't be accepted as a teacher and not for such motive in the first place. He's irresponsible and we're talking about Japan, one of the most strict places in the world.

You can't compare real people with fictional characters no matter what they do, by your logic most Anime characters would make you uncomfortable since they do sus stuff but considering you don't have issues loving AoT which again present worse stuff you complain and its based on really evil people. Heck, I can even mention Perfect Blue too since stalkers exist irl yet you don't have issues there. Finally, Esdeath is a serial killer yet she's one of your favourite characters.
BANZAI NIPPON. Nippon is the Land of freedom. Nippon is the Land of Peace. Nippon is the Land of Justice and Prosperity.

In Nippon, we trust.

We love Nippon, we love Anime. Anime love us, Nippon love us. 日本

@Nurguburu Actually... the themes you mentioned do tend to work better when treated seriously, GTO managing to do so as a comedy without cringeally glorifying said behaviour is the exeption to the rule, not the norm

And although i don't agree with OPs statement of the show coming off as creepy (knowing how the show evolves), it's understanddable that if you've been in/seen first hand similar situations seeing them again on screen (in a comical way or not) can make you uncomfortable

Anime sure does take liberties with Japanese high school life. And GTO isn't the worst of it. Consider how many times protagonist is walking with tsundere when it starts to rain because Japanese forecasters are rubbish, and the protagonist is apparently allergic to water, because he begins sneezing after one raindrop. But tsundere lives much closer so they go to her house, where no one is home and she takes his wet clothes and puts them in the dryer -- the *only* time there are dryers in anime (or Japan). He takes a shower, dries off with what he believes is her towel -- "indirect sex"? -- and she gives him perfectly fitting clothes than belong to her brother who was never mentioned before and will never be mentioned again. And that's just one example There are many, many more.

Jesus dude I’m not trying to insult the show it’s just not for me and I’m not gonna bother to keep watching it if it’s just never gonna click with me. I’m not saying any of the feelings I have are the most rational or logical but it’s how I feel about the show I’m not gonna waste my time if it’s more of the same. I’m not insulting the show or anyone who likes it at all I have no idea why you decided to make this personal and become so fucking hostile. Really think about how you’re responding to people on here, there is absolutely no need to be rude or have even commented that it was beyond a waste of time to read.

Aot, perfect blue are both not comedies… a serious look at uncomfortable themes and a comedic look t them are different 👁️👁️ I just don’t find it funny my guy…

Oh no, this show goes against my pristine new moral standards! Maybe in ten years when i shift them again i would like it or maybe the shows i like today become s*it. I didn't knew that americans were this conservatives. It's a show, and you know what? it's ok if you don't like it, but my man, if your taste depends of your morals you're going to suffer a lot. And you know what? child soldiers do exist, as well as high school girls dating guys in their 20's, because they want to, and it would keep happening you like it or not. What you gonna do about it? just relax man.

Brother when did I ever say I have a moral thing against this show it’s just not funny, and it makes me uncomfortable. That doesn’t mean it’s the most rational feeling, why does this make me uncomfortable and aot doesn’t when it has child soldiers idk man it just does. I just asked a question about if the first episode was similar to the rest of the show because I didn’t know if I should bother or not. Some of you guys really need to calm down and stop being so aggressively defensive when ur arguing and debating shit that like I didn’t even say. I understand why this show is well liked it just is not for me dude… like really tho y’all gotta stop being so hostile for no reason.

Brother I don’t think like u, I’m not like u. Sorry if the way I watch tv doesn’t make sense for u or u feel like I’m missing out idc. Why should I bother to keep watching a comedy show if it’s not funny to me. Y’all need to stop like weirdly psycho analyzing me when all I did was ask a fuckinh question and y’all got offended because you think I’m coming for a show you like.

Also like what is this… it happens in real life so what are you gonna do! relax and stop caring about if it makes u uncomfortable because I think if a show makes u uncomfortable it’s because ur letting ur “pristine new moral standards” dictate what u watch and that’s bad!

Listen to urself man 😐 all this because I said I don’t find him fawning over teen girls funny
