So I just finished Ep12, I was surprised with the shit show animation in the last episode, like Seven Deadly Sins level of bad.

So I decided to look up this SAO Parody (vr death game) up,
And I found out that not only is this obviously a LN adaptation but also has 22 volumes since 2013 and is still going on 🤯

Also has manga with 100+ chapters.

I'm honestly surprised they took a project with years of effort into it, and a pretty fun story and just turned it into 12 episodes slop, this franchise actually has more content to adapt than Demon Slayer but it will be forever known for being a mid generic 12 episodes show...

I really enjoyed this show and will look into reading the novel, a real shame to think what could have been.. could have been as great as SAO or Danmachi if given the proper care..
Hell even Rezero or Ufotable level, some of the character designs were really good..

That's all, time to keep learning Japanese so I can read the light novels one day.

The anime is about as generic and lifeless as it gets, made me wonder how the manga actually had a decent rating.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

I don't know exactly what you expected considering the problems that the studio that made it is having, it's already a miracle that they didn't postpone even one episode, even if the consequences are notable.

I wouldn't say It's lifeless, but it is definitely extremely generic, but there is nothing wrong with that. some of us just like a good generic power fantasy isekai, and as far as extremely generic ones go, this is quite good.

@hudd44 That's not really the point, the manga had a fairly good rating, so I wonder just how different it is.

@LostSpectre I binged the manga after the show ended. It's about the same quality (until the most recent chapters, which I struggle to understand what's going on.) It's just that people that share my taste really like The New Gate. Not a masterpiece by any means, but a fun read/watch. Fairly quality junk food.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with not sharing our tastes.

@LostSpectre TLDR: some people really like this sort of thing. The anime might end up being watched by anyone, but the manga is probably only going to be seen by people looking for anime fast food.

@hudd44 Nah. I'm sure the novel/manga is significantly higher quality than this mediocre adaptation, like the OP was saying.

As a manga reader of this, you’re correct. The manga isn’t something groundbreaking but it’s entertaining. This anime tho was rather terrible.

Manga wasn’t really it for me, but the LN is fun. Sure as hell beats reading the prepubescent snoozefest that is SAO

My only qualm with the LNs was the sudden ramp up in pace around volume 11/12. Paired with the lack of side stories in the later volumes, it means the fights just don’t feel as satisfying anymore. Because the story starts to roll from fight to fight quite rapidly, without any significant form of breathing room to let you digest the events and work up to the next story arc

The anime on the other hand, was just lazy with everything. From the unfilled plot holes to the complete retconning of events that made this first part of the story interesting in the LNs. Not to mention the animation and art style being borderline eye cancer inducing. I thought MobuSeka got a bad roll with the art, but damn. This was somehow worse

We talked about adaptation from 10yo source material, you know what's popular at that times? SAO. Ofc people copy-pasting that formula.

Similar with anime adaptation of RPG Ossan and sequel of isekai cheat year ago, the anime adaptation was happen way too late when the trend and meta already shifted. And stuff like this already labeled generic right now while it actually was a hype thing back then.

I personally enjoyed this anime, but yeah. The animation is shit and lots of shitty badly drawn frame too including the missing one. But i think that's the only problem i had a.k.a technical stuff because mostly lack of resources poured into this anime project.
