It seems like the series assumes viewers already have some historical knowledge. I watched the first episode, and the fast-paced sequence of events suggests that viewers are expected to be familiar with the people in real life.

Is there a Japanese crash course that isn't the bill wurtz history of japan that i have to know?

I’d suggest watching the anime Heike Monogatari, for a brief introduction to the Kamakura period of Japanese history, this series takes place at the end of the Kamakura period, with the conflict ending in the beginning of the Muromachi period, marked in its first period by the Nanbokucho period (the period of the courts)

Non.
It's either not really important to still enjoy the Show OR is explained, during the Episode.

Yes, this is a fairly famous historical period and characters for any Japanese person. Therefore, I am very intrigued by how they are going to develop this, given the fate of real prototypes. Like Robin Hood and Richard the Lionheart for an Englishman. But I don't think you need to know that to understand the plot. After all, you're not going to adjust your imaginary monocle every time the story makes reference to a real fact, are you?

@TheRealRouges The Heike ends with Yoshitsune's victory over the last Taira forces. This anime begins with the fall of the shogunate that his brother founded. This can be described briefly in general terms, but it is about a couple of centuries of history.

Yes, that kinda is what I said, what I meant was that it's a good way to familiarize with the period. Of course in the subsequent two hundred years we have the rise of the Hojo clan as real head of the Minamoto shogunate and then the Mongol Invasion (forgot to mention to watch Angolmois, which I think is a pretty decent anime on the topic) that then led to the fall of the Hojo who couldn't compensate the warriors that fought cause it was a defensive war without military gains in treasure and territories, but yeah the point stands

I'm actually quite familiar of these clans as I'm a huge fan of Dynasty/Samurai/Orochi Warriors series.

Houjou, as in Ujiyasu Houjou and Kotarou Fuuma.
Ashikaga, as in Yoshiteru Ashikaga
Minamoto, as in Yoshitsune Minamoto
Taira, as in Kiyomori Taira
