Those are 13 and 9 year old articles and the world has changed a lot since, even in "lost decades" stagnating Japan. Discs are becoming less and less important for carrying data as high-speed net access enables streaming to homes. BD box is now likely a status symbol and proof of devotion, for the shelf and never to be opened. (I'd guess those buying DVD version are the ones who actually watch it, since DVD tech is so ancient it has no status value at all.)
Anyhow, the threshold for an anime getting a second season is said to be 5500-6000 box sales nowadays, so GBC is doing double-plus good! Hopefully that momentum will remain at least for those discs carrying the first 8 episodes.
What Toei should further do is release GBC in LaserDisc format (~ vinyl LP sized analog video CD). They could charge 500 USD per copy and pre-orders would still fill up by yesterday. Nothing screams status symbol louder than an LD collection... (Players for LD are no longer made, so used ones sell for big bucks.)

| @Tacsk0 Nah those statistics are still correct even if outdated. And considering that people buy less discs because of streaming it doesn't make sense for the threshold to get higher. |
