It's so weird.

A lot of times, I would argue most of the time, when a manga gets a top tier adaptation, It will have a higher rating than it's source material. If it doesn't, it probably did something to piss a portion of the manga readers off.

Even "good" adaptations are sometimes rated higher than their given source material.

But monster, Made in abyss, Pluto, Vinland saga,

These are all absolutely amazing adaptation that are pretty much unanimously agreed to be great, yet ALL of them are rated lower than their given manga.

It's so weird, why is this?

Anime viewership is usually much bigger than manga readership so most people don't compare the Anime with the source, they use different standards for their ratings.

@Zarutaku That still doesn't explain why only seinen anime get lower ratings no matter how great the adaptation is.

@APolygons2 I don't think this is a seinen-only phenomenon, manga tend to get higher ratings than anime in general.
On MAL the Anime median score is 6.52 whereas Manga median score is 6.95 that's a significant difference.
The reason for that is probably what I said above: Anime fanbase is much bigger than manga fanbase and with more opinions the mean scores tend to be more "down-to-earth"

No, that virtually never happens.

@Zarutaku That is just not the case though.

Summer time render, Heavenly delusions, demon slayer, jujutsu kaisen, nichijou, mob psycho 100, fullmetal alchemist brotherhood,
Dragon maid, a silent voice, bocchi the rock.

Most "top of the class" adaptation of non-seinen manga have higher ratings in anime form, or are at least the same rating.

Any time where that isn't the case there is almost always a reason for it, and very few exceptions are made to it.

Plus I think it's unfair to look at the average of all anime or all manga when talking about this, because not only there are tons of anime that are NOT based on manga, and tons of manga that do not have anime,

there is also the fact that the comparison does not take the quality of the adaptation into account, which Is a key point here.

@Lucifrost

just looking at the top 10 highest rated shounen vs seinen series on mal:

Seinen:

1. Love is war: 1/3.5 seasons is higher, the rest are lower

2. march comes in like a lion: 1 season is lower, the other is slightly higher

3. Monster - anime is lower

4. Kingdom - anime is lower

5. Vinland saga - anime is lower

6. Mushishi - only season 2 is higher, by a 0.01 difference, the rest are lower

7. Oshi no ko - Higher (but I would argue this and love is war are like the least seinen seinen series out there)

8. Bungo stray dogs - only season 5 is higher. and even with that, I think bungo feels a lot more like a shounen.

9. Berserk 1997 - lower

10. pluto - lower

( I forgot made in abyss, which is also lower in anime format, despite everyone only singing the praises of it's adaptation, specially when it comes to the music)

Now compare that, to the top 10 highest rated shounen:

1. Frieren - anime is higher

2. FMAB - anime is higher

3. Gintama - anime is Higher, except 2 or 3 OVAs/movies

4. Attack on titan - anime is higher

5. hunter x hunter - anime is higher

6. Bleach - anime is higher, even the og one which everyone complains about the pacing is higher

7. A silent voice - anime is higher

8. Jujutsu kaisen - anime is higher

9. slam dunk - anime is lower

10. Haikyuu -anime is lower

If that's not virtually happening IDK what is.

Who would have expected that going out of your way to check the highest rated anime, you'd find they have higher ratings! Perhaps they're not representative of the majority of adaptations?

Not to mention the majority of your shounen examples have multiple seasons or adaptations, allowing you to cherry pick those parts you like.

And that doesn't have the seinen tag, proving my point that it's not a seinen thing.

@Lucifrost about just as many as the seinens have multiple seasons.

I honestly, bleach should be the biggest sell here, the series!

The on with a shit ton of filler, even that is rated higher than the manga, not just the latest season!

Lucifrost said:

This just blatantly false.

I just picked the top 10.

but not just that:

7/10 (8/11 if we count made in abyss) of the seinens I listed have other seasons/adaptation.

while 8/10 of the shounen have multiple seasons/adaptations. which is basically the same!!!

In fact, it's a bit more than fair, because for gintama, jjk, bleach and attack on titan,

The manga is pretty much rated lower than every single season. For AOT only s2 is lower (s1 too technically, by 0.01) and for gintama it's like 5% of the gintama anime that is lower than the manga.

So, That is again, just blatantly false.

Right.... but I did this for both of them. It's not like I got the top 10 shounen, and then randomized my seinen picks.

Abyss is considered a seinen in a huge part of the anime community.

If you look at any of those "best seinen anime of all time" lists, pretty much all of them tag it as one.

That doesn't quite prove the seinen fans to be outliers. Have you tried checking adaptations of novels and shoujo manga? It could be that only the top shounen anime have higher scores than their respective source material.
