Yikes, Miyo's rough life is never easy to watch.

I mean, even in the present, she's trying to prove herself despite some of the harsh words she receives. We got more background storytelling with her childhood again but it's not pleasant either. It feels like this episode protrays her life as a cruel reality and she's trying to make the best from she can do.

I don’t think calling a man with that nice build up and all, beautiful, is a nice thing but okay it was just like Miyo was at a loss of words, nothing more. Though it can partially be blamed on her upbringing as well. I mean that good-for-nothing douchebag of a father literally neglected his own firstborn daughter after getting a taste of a new pussy.

That mother and blonde bitch are no good themselves but that old man is the biggest eyesore. Anyways, enough with them. Now, since Miyo’s already at the house of Super Ikemen-san, she does have to do things befitting of a to-be wife. And the first rule is to take his words as commands.. like the old tradition, if he says it’s night, IT IS NIGHT and if he says there are stars in a freaking bright day, THEN THERE ARE STARS lol. And hey just like the old stories, Ikemen-san is something something in the military too, with special abilities(?).

Though that was kind of fun when he simply ignored the breakfast on the assumption that Miyo poisoned it back on the first day.. fun for us not for Miyo:(.. though great to see they came to an understanding, atleast for the time being, and man ate the food next day without doubting. And yes now
do doubt the wrongdoers, that is the Saimori family.

Good sounding OP and ED but damn it’s the visuals.

Huh uh, this apparently is a fantasy of sorts, right. It's the "beam of lights" kind of fantasy, lol.

Anyway, as one would expect, our dear Miyo is very much startled to her new surroundings, nobody yapps at her, nobody treats her as a slave, even the two people living in this house are ... nice to her ?

Well, one more than the other ... but i'm sure there is a good reason for that. Still, certainly not something Miyo is used to, certainly not what she was expecting.

Now, she still clings to what she knows, to what she was told to, but in this household they play by a different set of rules, and our Miyo would soon need to realize that there is a life beyond what she know :)

The OP is a banger, but those flashbacks are a fucking dread, Jesus.

Riria.'s OP is just a thing of beauty. And even more so for Kashitarou Ito's ED.

Miyo, now having to live with Kiyoka Kudo, his ruthless personality will eat into her as she expects the worst from him. The abandoned child who can't see the supernatural apart from the biological Kaya, Miyo knows it all, though she gets used to her usual routine as per back at the place she once called home. Kiyoka's personal servant Yurie being the kind one to help Miyo through getting used to Kiyoka, even things like cooking him a meal, thinking that Miyo spiked his food, it's good intentions gone bad, as the commander of the Anti-Grotesqueries readies his troops for situations like these, even when they're less likely to be called nowadays. Yoshito Godo is his second-in-command, though he's the easy-going joker.

Miyo, apologizing for her overstepping her boundaries into his territory, it's just that Kiyoka's not used to eating food made from unfamiliar people like Miyo, and she quivers from her malnutrition, serving Kiyoka to his best, though he doesn't need any help since Miyo could not see the supernatural. Instead, Kiyoka is actually caring about Miyo and her wellbeing, whilst she thinks of her cruel past-filled nightmares and thinking of her friend Hana, and hoping that she's alright. Yurie showing Miyo the ropes to serving food to Kiyoka, with the food that she legitimately made for him, he still finds it palatable, that to Miyo, this is the first time in a long while that she feels accepted and praised.

Kiyoka, seemingly interested in Miyo's affairs, wants to investigate into her mysterious past with the Saimori family, though who really knows if their supernatural abilities are what they seem.

Still intriguing, I really love the slow vibes, that add allure and charm to the series.

Getting more of those reverse Taishou Otome vibes already, and this was a splendid episode, I like Kudou, he has a rough exterior but he does indeed seem like a good man, giving Miyo something to do, maybe he caught on to her thinking she was useless after that rough first day. A really nice dynamic between the two of them so far, and I only imagine it gets better. The supernatural elements and flashbacks I'm a bit mixed on because it feels a bit shallow, but it's not terrible. The soundtrack is pretty good as well, but those visuals especially in the ED, lot of good work put into that.

Overall, just a much better impression than I got from the premiere, and I'm looking forward to more!

Damn that OP is really good. Both the song and animation are amazing.
Nice to learn more about the supernatural part
Poor Koji, he's got it the worst
Miyo was praised. Me happy.
The ED is good too. I like this artstyle.
Good episode

It is clear that Mio is suffering from anxiety, and the father is wrong for choosing a family that's often to compare their children by their fullest abilities.  Kaya may be more open-minded about the spirit game, but that does not mean that Mio is not capable of learning and growing. In fact, I think that Mio's anxiety could actually be an asset in the spirit game, as it would make her more cautious and aware of her surroundings. Kiyoka approves Mio's food on the other hand, was sweet. And he knows that Mio's still a mystery judging based on her appearance, unlike any other women he met, Mio shows an ordinary effort.

Not too crazy about the episode and drama elements present here besides the ending with Kiyoka observing Miyo and how she might have not been treated properly in her family. Those flashbacks of Miyo's anxiety-filled dreams about her family sort of tread in that fine line between a good showcase of the disturbing reality she experienced and something genuinely corny with the family members coming across as Disney villains-like while lacking any real depth in characterization. Sometimes it can really feel like a hit or a miss. It was at least nice seeing Yurie and Miyo's bonding throughout the episode and the old lady stand up for Miyo when Kiyoka was being rude to her by failing to try her food and sort of acting cautiously rude at the start. Since he has observed some issues with her apologetic, almost scared personality and frail body, he might change his tone for good like with the end of the episode as he tried her food without caution. Still a lot of mysteries to unfold in general.

The opening is really good to watch and listen to, compliments the show nicely too. Ending is not my thing, Kashitaro Itou's voice just doesn't do it for me when it comes to songs and the same goes for this show's ED too.

The OP and ED are beautiful! Mio learning to navigate the Kudo household, Yurie looks like shes right in sayint that Mio will make a good wife for Kiyoka. The way he treated her when it came to the breakfast was quite the scene, since he wasn't being true to his feelings. Can't wait for the romance when he actually starts showing them wwww, but for now these bonding scenes are sweet enough <3

Wait I wasn't expecting supernatural from this anime, that caught me by surprise. Kudou though, he thought she poisoned his food, suspecting her makes sense given his position and he doesn't know about Miyo much but I'm glad he understood and let her cook him a meal. Just look at how happy it made her, I'm happy for her. Looks like he's gonna look into Miyo's background and seems like Miyo's mother's family might be special as the Tatsuhisa's wanted her. I just hope Kudou can avenge Miyo and make the Saimori family suffer somehow. They deserve it, piece of garbage. Love the OP btw, it's beautiful and matches the anime. ED is good too.

Miyo's past her suffering was shown more, kudou is a little friendly to miyo when compared to the other fiances he had in the past and there is also something mysterious about miyo and this episode also focused on supernatural abilities a lot.

Absolute obdience huh. Though i doubt even Kiyoka expected her to agree so easily. Pretty good OP that featured a nice variety of emotions with great visuals. The supernatural element sure was a nice way of spicing things up. Though you could say that was also the first straw that changed Miyo's life. Being able to cook herself would be a good thing in her new life. The breakfast looked delicious. Overall a fun ep that while doing well in showing Miyo's first days at the Kudo household also did well to expand upon Kiyoka as well. Its nice to see the two start to warm up given how poorly her life had been up to this point in time. In the background seems that there's more to Miyo than meets the eye judging from that last phone call.

I cant not feel bad for Miyo. We got to see how her stepmom were treating her and how she fired the only servant that cared for her. Looking at her being obedient is sad, but at least she got appreciated for once and that's wholesome

Agreed a lot of the characters seem too one note so far, I don't like shows portray abuse so cartoonishly. And it doesn't seem like the mc is going to be anything more than meek subservient and kind. The show has nice visuals but besides that there's not much hooking me.

It's nice to know that Kaya started out as a normal child, and only became a terrible person later.

Apparently Miyo does have supernatural value. Albeit only as a receptacle to pass on supernatural power to the next generation.

Poor Miyo has such low expectations. She's thinks she's lucky she didn't get abused or kicked out the house :(.

It also sucks that the stepmother is such a terrible person because she's got the classic 1920s hairstyle and makeup that I really like. Maybe it's too "western" for Japanese tastes.

Edit: rereading the manga, only the stepmother locks her in the storage. In the anime, the whole family locks her up! How terrible! (Haven't read the novel though)

This show is an absolute masterpiece and a strong contender for AOTS.
I can feel this emotional bond with Miyo, her plight and troubles seem geniuene and when Kudou finally taste her food and praised her really gave me a tear in the eye. A little bit of happiness is totally what she needed after all this time.

I have to admit, I love that they're expanding the story/world a bit more. I read most of the manga and I like how the anime so far is not condensing the story. The manga felt a little rushed at some points, so this episode was a nice change of pace!

The only thing is I would love everyone's take on the animation. The art visuals are pretty, but I feel as if the actual animation/cinematography isn't that great? There are less cuts and wide camera shots. I'm not sure if it's me being nitpicky as an artist, or if maybe this was a lower priority production? Not sure, what do you all think?

Like I said, the story is great and lots of the visuals are as well, so I'm just wondering if it's just me who's noticed :)

What more characterization do they need ? Motives for why both of her parents treat her as such, were established. Father abandoned her the moment she showed no sign of "powers", while her step mother wanted to put her own daughter to be the spotlight of the family.

Here, both established with their own characterization.

It doesn't have much subtlety to it. The only thing shown about the mother is her being cruel for the sake of being cruel. She's just is the wicked stepmother trope, nothing else to her. It comes off like a plot device to make you feel bad for the mc.

"cruel for the sake of being cruel"

I don't understand what you want. She's there to be the villain, you can spend ten episodes giving her backstory, witty plots, schemes, but at the end shes still a villain that we as the viewers are supposed to dislike. Not everything is a trope.

I'm not saying to make her likable, or even that the show has to spend a lot of time fleshing her out. Just that a character who only ever acts in one way is boring. If she's just supposed to be an evil stepmom and that's all there is to her, then why spend that much time on her? showing the same kinds of abusive actions against the mc over and over is just redundant and unnecessary. And the only thing I can really take away from the mc is that the audience should pity her, what's entertaining about that? And the "evil stepmother" is literally a trope. What do you mean it isn't?

The best part of the show is that there is no sudden turn in the treatment miyo gets from kudou but rather it's slow which is apt

I'm not sure if this was in the novel but in the manga there is a slight indication that the loss of appetite is probably because she doesn't get to eat dinner often in her home ; (

Food in anime always look so delicious somehow no matter how simple. All that household work experience paid off for Miyo, her first happy moment in a very long time!

I wonder when we are going to "see" the creatures.
