It feels so weird that highschoolers having sex is normally implied in the movie, yet with every drink it has to be specified that it's non-alcoholic. When I think about how children party where I live, I would say that at this age many would drink somewhat on occasions like new year's, but high school couples usually don't have sex this early (or maybe my friend circle just doesn't, doesn't change the first point).

Is there some Japanese law that explicitly prohibits the depiction of minors drinking? Why is implying sexual relationship all good but alcohol isn't even if they usually come in the opposite order?

The age of consent in japan is quite low from my understanding so sex at high school is probably just a more normal thing. And I’m pretty sure japan are very strict on underaged drinking, so it is just rarely depicted in anime.

In my friend group, people were definitely having sex regularly earlier than drinking regularly. I also don't really see a problem with them portraying a natural physical things that humans go through as normal. Drinking may be culturally normal, but it's not like puberty, hormones, sex drive etc. Also, this is my personal opinion, but I also think sex is much more wholesome and healthy than drinking/party culture. I'd much rather promote sex to young people than substance abuse.

Age of consent in Japan is 13 but for some reason drinking alcohol is prohibited until you are 20. So yeah, japanese law basically.

EDIT: as it came to my knowledge, Japan has recently raised its age of consent to 16-18 varying in different cities, thus my words are no longer valid.

In my opinion it is interesting to see it from a different perspective since in my country (Poland) most of first grade high schoolers are drinking, somoking e-cigarets is very common and popular even in late primary school classes (everyone smoked at least some times, almost no exceptions!), and in high school in every third and fourth class is for sure some people who had sex at least once (I know cause i am a high schooler myself)

Age of consent in Tokyo is 18 and in most places in Japan it’s at least 16.

Because there’s no way underage drinking would be happening at a party with Iino present

This is a pretty big misconception and misleading. 13 was the minimum age it could be.

Recently it was raised to 16 federally, but even then, the prefectures can raise the consent age on their own, and almost every prefecture in Japan had raised it to 16-18, with most being 18 AFAIK.

how about neither? sex is healthy as much as sugar is, though not even. In moderation, paired with an already healthy diet, and it makes children really unhealthy.

I don't think there are much more things that are as desensitivizing and corrupting to kids as sex. Something that ideally you want to do with the person you'll spend the rest of your life with, otherwise it brings about, sooner or later, depression and a lack of responsibility.

Sex after legal age is legal. Drinking before legal drinking age is illegal.
Also sex was implied while drinks were shown on screen.

Maybe it was an intended comedic element? Or to not risk making PG-rating higher?

There are other anime showing minors drinking normally though. In one there was PA at the start "while we show minors drinking, we do not encourage nor condone it" or something like that

Seems like that some TV stations or networks probably have updated guidelines on minor drinking in anime. Similar to how some anime can't depict nudity or intense violence without censorship. But the underage drinking thing probably became a standard after the 2000's. Idk if the law has anything to do with it.

If you watch older anime like Kimagure Orange Road from the 80's you'll see that underage drinking was quite common. The manga was published on the Shonen Jump magazine. It was not a seinen series.

Sometimes the characters might say things like there's only a little alcohol in a cocktail drink but they'd also specifiy what type of drink it was. Like Brandy or beer. So it’s a polar opposite of recent anime where they need to specify that the drink ISN'T alcoholic.

From moral standpoint there is no inconsistency. 17 yo person is mature enough to have sex with another 17 yo person. There is no harm, psychological nor physical. Usually only religious people find it problematic, but it’s them who’s the problem, not the society. And it has nothing to do with the age of consent as some people mentioned it here. Alcohol though is just bad for health, especially normalising it for underage people. It’s basically a drug.

From legal standpoint, there are probably tv guild lines or laws that you can’t show underage people drinking alcohol. I don’t think there is a law that prohibits implication of 17 people having sex in a piece of art.

If they didn't, then I don't see a reason why they would need to explicitly point out the non-alcoholic nature of drinks.

Unlike sex, Alcohol is incredibly bad for health, especially given their age as their organs are likely to be developing still so Alcohol will also interfere with the development of their organs.

Yea, the more I watch anime the more I am with Japanese.
As a westerner I didn't understand why the fuck is gore, violence, drinking, drugs, swearing and other shitty behaviour is rather okay to be showed, but god forbid if 2 loving people have to have sex.
All things mentioned before age rating r/15/16.
Loving couple engaging in consentual fun age rating 18.
It sure feels like love = bad and everything else negative = good.

....I wasnt aware that high schoolers having consenting sex was against the law in Japan?

Must be crazy over in abstinence world.

Edit: Aaand my morbid curiosity strikes. Some places really dont have the exemption of "close in age" is not illegal, but it is still mostly unprosecutable because that would do more damage then harm.

Japan is not one of those cases, though.

Your social circle is full of nerds, probably, if it isn't common for you to have sex at 16-18. Or maybe you're from a more conservative country like India or something. I'm pretty much sure that at the end of high school 80-90% of my classmates, male or female, weren't virgins, and I'm from eastern Europe which is a more conservative place than, let's say, the USA. I had my first GF at 15, and that was when we both had our first time, if you're wondeing, and I wasn't even the "fastest" among the guys I know. Finding a 18-year-old girl who's hot and is still a virgin is extremely hard if you aren't from a conservative country with "no sex until marriage" rules and shit. For guys it's more common to be a virgin even until your twenties if you are a nerd who's shy with girls or just ugly. And a funny thing - 30% of Japanese are still virgins at 30 years old.

On another note, I get your point about the alcohol as in my culture it's acceptable for teens to drink alcohol under the supervision of their parents even when they are, like, 11-13 year olds, that was the age when I first tried alcohol, lol. And, surprise, I didn't grow up a drunkard and was truly drunk only a couple of times in my 28 years of life.
