I know Clannad has always been somewhat slow, but I don't understand what exactly is happening in this anime. I came in expecting a continuation of Nagisa and Tomoya arc, which would be something pretty reasonable to expect from the 1st season, but what I got instead was Sunohara, Misae and Yukine arc. I mean, c'mon, is this really in the source material or it's all just filler? Why anyone would want a Sunohara, Misae and Yukine arc? Anyway, I'm almost on my limit here, this is about to stay in my watching list, stuck at episode 7, for a very long time. So before I decide to just stop watching at the moment, should I expect things to actually get better and develop, is this going somewhere?

Your like an episode or 2 away from entering into the main story of the season. But yes, it is necessary to have Sunohara, Misae and Yukine arcs. Sunohara because he’s a goated character but Misae and Yukine’s arcs are very important to setting up and understanding the ending.

Okay, time to continue watching then, let's see. If anything, I'm glad these fillers-like episodes are about to end.

You'll see they weren't quite just straight filler once you get near the end, I can see why you feel that way though

The first 8 eps are why I couldn't give After Story a 10 as it just felt like a similar format to what season 1 is. However you are now at the peak of Clannad. Enjoy

Almost every visual novel is like that. Every main character gets an arc. Steins;Gate, Kanon and so much more anime are structured like clannad. And that makes sense, because in the most visual novels, there are multiple endings. One ending for each character. So if you ever want to watch an anime again, that adapts a VN, remember it could be like clannad and be boring for you.

It absolutely does go somewhere. I'm going to go contrary to everybody else here, for me, it went from a great anime to a mediocre anime real quick, but for some people, it goes from an 8 or a 9 to a 10.

How much you'll get from this anime is really subjective, so I can't tell you if it's worth it or not, but I didn't like it personally. To me, it felt like it turned into a shitty drama, and I kept rolling my eyes at every single "dramatic" thing that happened. Obviously though, I'm just one guy, and a lot of people really like this series for the exact things that I didn't like.

To be fair episodes 5 to 8 of as are the worst clannad in its entirety gets. Unfortunately they are very important for the story, otherwise I would just recommend skipping them. Episode 9 is where the main story starts

Of course I know what a Visual Novel is, and I've read my share. Not Clannad tho, and that doesn't mean I have to know how the story is supposed to be. Why assume I'm trolling when all I did was ask a very simple and genuine question? Don't take things that personally, it's not healthy. All the question implied was an answer like: "No, it doesn't get much better than that" or "Yes, there's actual progression and the story does get better after these arcs". Simple, no?

Either way, from what I gathered in this thread, I think it's almost unanimous that these episodes I just watched are just the slow introduction of After Story, and the real deal starts now, so thanks everybody.

The first season didn't adapt their arc, and besides, sunohara's character needed some depth because he was only used as a comedic relief character. Though i agree that yukine's arc is boring but it's only 2 episodes. The main arc starts at episode 9 and the best part starts at episode 17

Well, I finished it, apparently episode 22 was the last one; the true ending of the series. I can't say I understood everything that happened in the ending, and I'm not exactly sure if I liked it either, it felt like a tremendous asspull quite honestly, I have some mixed feelings about it. Also, I'm not entirely sure if everything was a dream or if reality actually changed and they got their magical happy ending after all. Either way, I can say I was deeply touched by the series, in general. I wasn't expecting to feel the drama the way I did, but it worked greatly for me. This is definitely a very beautiful story, a dramatic story about love and coming of age. Not gonna lie, it really surprised me. I guess I will go with a 7/10 for this one, pretty good. Actually, if it wasn't for the first 8 episodes and for this controversial ending, it could easily be a 8~9. That's it, thank you for all the replies.

No the ending was not asspull .......
Remember the the town legend the light orbs that grants people wishes when they help someone just like that how fuko in s1 was moving as a ghostlike form .......u can see that whenever tomoya helps someone he gained a light orbs and when tomoya said farewell to his father ushio saw that light orbs going inside tomoya heart ......
The town legend was defined by the librarian girl .
And remeber the strange girl from the world of emptiness it was ushio she was collecting all the orbs that tomoya gained ......

I can tell u that the ending is not asspull everything will make sense if u watched it for the second time .....
If u don't want to rewatch then see the explaination on Google or YouTube .....
If u want to go deep into the story the play the visual novel .....
For me the anime is 9.7/10
The nagisa character really broke me ...

Here's the explaination
https://www.thebobaculture.com/anime/a-simple-explanation-of-clannads-ending

I understand it, I just don't think it fits the story at all, personally. It feels something that wasn't explained well enough in the anime, it was there the whole time but it always felt like something disconnected from the story itself, something very distant. Honestly, I think it would have been better if Clannad was just a normal, down to earth, slice of life and coming of age story. After everything that happened with Nagisa, Tomoya could've learned how to live with Ushio, establish himself and even find another woman to be with, perhaps Kyou would fit perfectly, and then move on in a new family life. The whole alternative reality, another world, reversing time and space, altering the whole story through a light orb that grants any wish and embodies the soul of the city, feels like something completely alien to me. Either way, that's probably my major complaint, the series is indeed pretty great.

well it's your opinion because clannad was already a supernatural story from the start like the fuko arc it's already seen that there is supernatural in the story ......
the town legend was actually explained two times in the story as far as I can remember......
u know ur not the only one who said that they should stick to the normal or without any supernatural power ....
the main reason people said that because when nagisa and tomoya married in the after story the story goes too realistic and they were facing real life problems and sadness and in the end nagisa died then people tends to focus more on sadness than the story itself that's why they complain about the supernatural shit in clannad ......
for me it's the best drama and romance anime of all time and nagisa was my first waifu and still my best waifu.....

well it's not like I didn't get ur point.....i understand ur point fully and somehow agree that it .....

Actually, I don't think it's a mistake, or a flaw or whatever, it's more simple than that. I just don't like it very much, and that isn't an impediment for loving the series as whole, a 7 is basically one of my highest and most selective scores. Anyway, you mentioned Fuko, and that's another part of the story I have mixed feelings, it always felt like something that don't belong in the series. Whenever Clannad goes full supernatural, I dislike it. But I do get it, and if I had to choose one interpretation of the ending, I'd still prefer the supernatural one over the pure and simple tragedy. In the end, the elements are all there, scattered around the story, since the beginning, I just think it would've been better off without it.

Those episodes you dislike aren't even part of the game's After Story. The side characters have their own routes just as Fuko and Kotomi do. The anime puts them in the 2nd season because they don't fit in the 1st, and Little Busters does the same. Clannad has so many routes, in fact, that 1 character is completely cut from the anime!
