This had a really deep sci-fi theme to it given the world setting and contents of the show.

Kaina seems like a dedicated young woman, to survive in this harsh environment. This episode gave me a mix of sci-fi and survival themes with fantasy. A very intruging start imo and the music made the episode feel like a mini-movie. Maybe a dark horse of this season? We'll see but definitely interesting imo. The theme songs are also kinda catchy.

Polygon Pictures's 40th Anniversary feature original anime. Damn, didn't know that the 3DCG studio was THIS old.

The OP, I really like its tempo notes, really catchy.

Created by Tsutomu Nihei, the author of BLAME! and Knights of Sidonia, this "boy-meets-girl high fantasy" set in a world where land is being swallowed by the encroaching Great Snow Sea, it's a slow but progressing start. This has the atmosphere of a mix between Lost Insanity (if anyone ever watched the abysmal anime to begin with) and Fumetsu no Anata e.

The boy from the Canopy, Kaina, living with its inhabitants who are surviving on the bare minimums, it's a harsh world where he is only one of few people left standing. This is the same for Ririha, the Atland princess who's gliding in the Snow Sea with her crew to drift to safety from enemy forces: the Valghian "aliens" onboard ships. It's the usual ob for Kaina, only this time it's different because of the floater that contains Ririha in it.

This show looks gorgeous, even with the use of 3DCG. Really, I think this delivered what I should expect of an original anime, and my investment value in this show has only raised up the high bar. Plus, the movie announcement before the anime started, it's ballsy for expectations.

I gotta say I did not expect to finish even the first episode thanks to it being cg but the backgrounds just look too damn good and the story is intriguing. I guess I'll actually give this a try for now.

Leave it to Polygon Pictures to give us something different. The setting is really adventurous. I wish the script had sucked me in as much. Well, it can change. Time will tell(I will say that Sidonia showed more promise)

Good start in any case. I also tend to dig Polygon's style and sound design in pretty much all the series I've tried. This one is no exception.

This is a interesting start. Nice visuals. I didn't notice before but the voice cast is great too. Looks like they have a big budget. We rarely see good 3DCG like this.

Still don't know anything about the story but this kind of sci-fi is rare in anime. Seems more like a Hollywood movie.

I'm looking forward to next episodes.

Aw hell yeah, I was itching for a new sci-fi and this one checks all of the boxes for a fabulous first ep. It's immersive, CGI not distracting at all. I was pulled into this new beautiful world and I'm eager to see where they take us.

Excellent, classical 1st ep with introduction of MCs, just enough background. Love the designs, the music is brilliant, and the bad guys seem formidable.

I don't know a thing about the source material but damn. Good stuff.

Art is meh and CG is not unwatchable but not good either, but setting and backgrounds are really interesting. Also am a sucker for all post-apocalyptic themes so am looking forward to this one.

As usual liked the setting of Nihei’s worlds. 3DCGI is not my stuff. And also worried about the characters and how will be their interactions. Presumably the story will be focused on a journey across an interesting world to discover.

I tried, but it couldn't hold my intrest got bored after 5 min wanted the episode to end as soon as possible. CG just can't carry you all the way it's impossible to connect with the characters no matter how good it looks if the characters are lifeless and look robotic it's not possible to finish 1 episode let alone hold out the entire season. They are getting better at it, but there is just no life or emotion in it.

Damn - this is probably the best introduction to a scifi/fantasy world I’ve seen in a long time. Just the geography of the world makes me wonder how the characters are going to move around in this world, or how things work. I wonder how the spearguns work? And why people have them topside but not on the snow ocean don’t have them? It’d make their balloons way easier to catch. Is there reduced gravity up top? And since the billboards suggest that this is some sort of post-apocalyptic extension of our world, what happened? And how much further in the future are they from us? Was the canopy some sort of attempt to solve global warming? If so, why does it seemed to be propped up by vines that look like giant tree roots?

Looking forward to this.

It’s good to get a fantasy series that isn’t generic like a majority of modern anime fantasy series. This one actually felt like they put effort into the worldbuilding.

People are gonna call the cgi bad no matter what the quality of it is, but to give my honestly opinion, while it’s not studio orange good, it’s still pretty decent.

Whoa... that opening scene is so compelling! Makes you wonder! The whole episode is full of wonders! I love how this anime is the "show, don't tell" type! I'm free to wonder! ^^

I expect the CG would bother a lot of viewers. But not me. This is actually done pretty well! The backgrounds are beautiful! This world is so interesting! :D

While i'm not a big cgi fan, it was okay on the whole. They did amazing animation/world design in some moment (in the canopy and the tree). The premises of the show seems good so fare and cool world building. I think this show will be slept on

Amazing world-building. A sea of snow is such a cool idea. I can't wait to see this story evolve.
The background music OST was freaking good. REAAAAALLLY good music during the floater scenes and action scenes.

The manga is an adaptation of the anime. It just came out first. This isn’t a new thing. The evangelion manga started before the anime, for example.

I been waiting this anime for a while since I first saw a trailer of it. I have so much questions. Like, those billboard signs... Did humanity was at a modern world like we are today with cars, skyscrapers and just technology at one point. And did something lead up to the moment of a near extinction event to humanity? Because it seems like there is two groups completely trapped and separate from one another with no knowledge of what happened.

And those massive orbital spiral trees. They are so high up that they are in essentially low Earth orbit almost and so have to wear special masks to be able to breathe good it seems like. And something is happening that is destroying that entire place and all the trees have withered and dying. I wonder why? Does it have to be because of the Vahlgan Empire? Who seems to be the enemies. Is it because of a time thing? Did humanity make those  as a way to survive a catastrophe on Earth and it was supposed to be a temporary thing until they fixed the problem or live past it, but the problem never fixed itself? Oh man so much questions so unanswered. I am so intrigued.

Hmm, now this is CGI I can actually tolerate. Looks decent compared to Trigun Stampede, imo. Of course, it still would look better hand-drawn.

This episode was kind of slow, though. I found myself watching on 1.5x speed to get through it.

yeah I actually like CGI anime personally. Netflix originals are mostly CGI anime and I surprising love most of them like the Godzilla one, the weird space one, and some of their other sci-fi and post apocalyptic ones.

This gives me Made in Abyss and To Your Eternity vibes, in that there seems to be a lot of lore and exploration in this setting, which was quite interesting to me. The backgrounds are gorgeous, the soundtrack was quite nice, and I hear that Hiroyuki Sawano had a part in the music composition, which is always a delight. The CGI is a bit ungainly in presentation at times, but it wasn't too bothersome.

This could be a show to look out for. The setting really intrigues me.

Considering Kaina was surprised at how a floater had gotten that high up, I'm wondering how it was able to do so while carrying a basket with a person in it if they don't even do that on their own. Just a random thought I had. But anyways, I usually don't watch anime that are completely CGI like this, but it actually didn't bother me this time. I really liked the visuals and the story is interesting, I can't wait for more!

  • The premise of the story is a typical one of Nihei's: dystopia with dying civilization.
  • The CG drawing is flat, especially at the scene of horse(!?) riding.
  • The direction failed to give an impact at the beginning.

Having said above, this is one of the anticipated shows of this season for now.
