Currently watching the original anime adaptation right now (on episode 11), what is this? Without spoilers, preferably. Is it more faithful to the manga?

Yes, it's a remake. The original 1999 version adapts the manga until episode 15, and everything else after that is filler. This remake is a rushed adaptation that tries to adapt all 23 volumes of the manga in 23 episodes.

This is an insult to a wonderful manga, 23 volumes squeezed into 24 episodes, just mixed random plots from it, what could go wrong? This story deserves so much better.
