I don't think this is a spoiler at all since it's the whole premise of the show..

I read a few rants from both sides of the like/dislike. The thing they seem to have in common is a lack of understanding of why "Lost Ones" must be killed. I thought it was explained pretty well in the anime?

It's not just "before they get bad" these people are impossible to save, they have an illness, an illness which gives them super powers that can destroy the world as time goes on. The only chance for them to actually die with the least amount of damage is as soon as their summoned and even that is as dangerous as hell for the world in general.

It's like giving a functioning alzhiemers patient the codes to nuclear war heads, and just hope one day they don't forget they might accidentally set one off.

I mean, I think most people lose the reason they kill Lost Ones because they killed the guy that appeared first that didn't do anything. So killing the typical self insert guy that we saw first who didn't do anything YET, the key here is yet, since he was even planing in taking revenge.

But from what I see, it seems like some people don't pay attention to the series and go to the direction of they killed someone innocent, because again, he didn't do anything yet. So yeah, people somehow lose the point in why they kill Lost Ones.

I only watched 6 episodes so far and I haven't read any rants, but my issue with this "illness" narrative is that it comes from what the Church is teaching and I don't really see a lot of reasons to trust them. We probably can conclude that 4 big catastrophes happened, but we don't have any details, we only have the Church's take on them. And the smaller scale catastrophe that we see in flashbacks is arguably the Church's fault. so idk

If for the sake of the argument we assume that the Church is lying about the Lost Ones, then we're left with "secret police" who kill innocents based on constructed prejudice.

If we assume they aren't lying, then they're doing pragmatically useful things, but they have to rob people of their time, which could've been spent on the things other than mass destruction.

Maybe it's the second half that really hammers in that the church isn't lying and these are indeed dangerous beings. I'm not quite sure. But yea the church can't be trusted because they're old and powerful and refuse to bend their ways. But that's also just part of the world building of the story.

The anime ends too early to discover if there is indeed another way, but I'm strongly doubting there actually is one.

From episode one, if these people die they lose control of their powers and basically self destruct destroying the area around them. This is also hammered in more in further episodes. But not only do they self destruct, they're a ticking time bomb that ticks down every time they use their powers. It's not an illness, it's a fact.

I guess the mistake is they drawn out the world building part too long. To get a full understanding of the story you need to actually watch the whole story, maybe watch it all at once? Maybe there needs to be an obviously neutral narrator to the story too.

I'm just really sad and disappointed some beautiful girls will be skipped over due to what appears to be a misunderstanding.
