| The title of anime is 咲うアルスノトリアすんっ! "Sun" part, however, is not the "star above our heads" sun. It is Arsnotoria's sun~sun~ sound! Why? Because す in すんっ is "su", not "sa". And っ is a gemination mark. If it were English "sun", it would be さん, or even more likely サン writtten in katakana. So, sunn~ There is no such onomatopoeia as "sun~" in classical Japanese dictionaries, but there is 吸う [suu] - "to inhale", and there is kunkun - common Japanese "sniff-sniff". I think that "sun~" is a conjecture of both, and in a way, it is a more cute version of "kunkun", unique to Arsnotoria. Other important thing to say is that Little Alberta, when shortened, becomes 小アルちゃん (Koaru-chan). That's how they always call her. So she is no one else than Koala-chan, and koalas are known for sleeping long :). I am 95% sure that was a wordplay intended by creators. People fluent in Japanese are kindly welcome to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is deciphered pretty accurate. ----------- Edit: っ at the end of the word will shorten it, not lengthen. That's a small mistake, but all points remain the same. |

However, "Smile of the Arsnotoria the Animation" is also there, so it is a part of the title. Manga has exactly the same title as anime afaik. |
| Now about girls' names: Most of them originate from names of magic grimoires, like Abramelin - 15th century book about an Egyptian mage, Arsnotoria - Ars Notoria, part of Ars Goetia, most famous medieval book about magic, Paulina - Ars Paulina, part of the same book. Hence they are sisters, Picatrix - 11th century manuscript about astrology. Now for more obsure references. These guesses are wilder; people who played the game might know about names' origins more. So if you know more correct information, by all means please share. Mell メル (Meru) - most likely from Mercury, aka Hermes, fleet-footed and nimble god of arcane studies. Or, less likely but also possible, from Merlin, mage advisor of king Arthur. Little Alberta and Great Alberta - elder sister most likely comes from Albertus Magnus, aka Albert the Great: XIII century mystic, saint, theologist and alchemist. There is, however, no historical figure known as "Albertus Minor", so Little Alberta is probably an original character. Because, y'know, if you have Big, you must have Small, right? Solow ソロー could be Solo, or Sorrow. But I suppose she is actually Thoreau, after American philosopher known primarily for his Walden, a book about living in the woods in harmony with the nature. Since our teacher is shown as a person with deep connection to nature, I think this is a sound guess. Voiniy ヴォイニ― most likely from Voynich Manuscript, a mysterious book written in an unknown language. Ashram, their school - sanskrit आश्रम: a hermitage, asylum or monastery in induistic tradition. Finally, Hammit ハミット is vague. I presume she's not "Hammit", but Hermit, especially if you consider that they are inseparable friends with "Thoreau", who was kind of a hermit himself. Perdura ペルデラ - no ideas. There's a sort of wine called Perdera, there's Spanish word "peleador" meaning "fighter", but it may be an original name, e.g. nickname of some artist who worked on the game. I'm not sure about this one. |
