As the subject line says. I haven't watched season 1 of MiA since it first aired, and I want catch up and watch Dawn of the Deep Soul and then start season 2. But I'd really like to rewatch everything from season 1. Should I actually watch the episodes or go for the recap movies? Is there anything cut out of the movies?

Well the recaps are almost 4 hours long in total so you could basically watch the whole first season in that time

Watch the first season and then the 3rd movie, there aren't that many reasons to watch the recap. The pacing is better in the show no and they aren't shorter than the series, there's no suspense or emotion and for me it ruins a bit the experience of the true Made In Abyss

there's nothing really cut out of the movies so it could be a good choice to watch the movies don't forget to also watch the third movie so that you can understand everything so far in season 2, I hope you enjoy, it's a very good anime

It's better to just watch the first season instead of the recaps

The movies are about as long as the series anyways so it is really up to you.

if you've watched the series already then watch the movies. that's what i did, and the movies recapped the series pretty well, including all of the important parts. since it is a movie it makes it easier to binge too

Despite it making no big difference in time or content or whatever... (I don't really know. Seems to me a recap would cut scenes. Otherwise why is it called a Recap...)

Why is everybody just trying to speedrun their Anime nowadays? o.O

Why would you prefer a recap over the actual thing, if you really wanna enjoy watching the Show?

Definitely Season 1, you'll hear one of the best openings there is!

If you want the full experience, then watching the show is probably better.

Also, make sure you've seen Movie 3. Movie 3 takes place after Season 1 and Season 2 takes place after Movie 3.

If you just want to have watched the stuff from before the 3rd movie then watch the recap(if I am not wrong they just cut the stuff that wasn't in the manga). But if you wanna watch the it and enjoy a few extra scenes that are really nice: watch the 1st season

Different Question

Is there any merit to watching the movies (1, 2), if you just watched the original season? (i.e. additional scenes)

Thanks for all the responses everyone! To be clear for a few people who may have missed it in my original post, I have already watched the first season, but it's been a while and I was just pondering the best way to re-watch before delving into movie 3. I think I'm going to just watch the whole first season again since the recap movies don't seem to add much if anything, and I always watch movies in chunks over multiple days anyways, lol (I know, it's one of my most psychotic habits). Thanks for your help!

i would watch season 1, movie 3, season 2.

HOWEVER, i turned on the first 5 minutes of the 1st movie after finishing season 1 bc there is literally 1 added scene that isn’t in season 1 and then you will immediately know where that scene ends (very short) bc the movie picks up right where season 1 started. so after that scene, turn off the movie and go to movie #3. it’s not an essential scene but I liked the added content.

Thanks for the info, not sure if this fully answers my question,

I'll say yes. The series sagged for a few episodes in the middle. Movie versions nicely tighten up the pacing.

If you’re re-watching, then just do the movies then watch season 2. Pure opinion, but for a rewatch and you watched the episodes the first time, it gives you a quicker catch-up plus you have to watch dawn of the deep soul as a movie anyways.
