I'm guessing they are, because they're literally gems, but the subtitles refer to the characters sometimes as "him"

Those are anthropomorphic gems, so they don't have a biological sex and I believe that they don't have a gender as well.

Yes, except for the Master. He's male. Everyone else is genderless but AFAIK all subs refer to them as males (him / él).

I can't remember the reason behind this. I think it was something along the lines of male pronouns are more common among the few Japanese words that do have genders, similar to the way that in the English language we say "all mankind" or "son of man" even tho we're referring to people in general.


It was smthn like that. But i might just be remembering wrong n chatting outta my ass tho

well the va’s for everyone (except sensei) are female, but the subtitles say “him” but they’re rocks so they have no gender

rocks have no gender and they have no reproductive organs. You hear some gems refer to another with "onii-chan" but it doesn't mean much
