Shounen ai is a genre, not a "this is gay" signifier. Same reason Yuri On Ice isn't labelled as BL. Also yaoi is exclusively used for porn. |

Yeah, ditto to all that Salty. It’s campy fun that definitely strongly implies some of the characters have romantic feelings for each other but that doesn’t necessarily make it a Shounen Ai as that’s not the primary focus of the story. |

Yaoi is used exclusively for p0rn, shonen Ai / bl is a suitable tag, I think it should be tagged even if it's not the main focus, for example : there's action animes with romance tag even If it's not the main focus of the show. |

It's not shounen ai nor yaoi: neither gay romance nor gay porn is the main focus of the show, and having gay characters doesnt mean it automathically focuses on romance. It's 'magical boy' genre + 'psychological'. |

Yaoi and shounen-ai are both outdated terms not used in Japan. The correct term is Boys Love, or just BL. But let's ignore this since MAL sticks to Yaoi/Shounen-ai tags. For something to be considered BL it's very simple: it's gotta be marketed as such. Fairy Ranmaru, just like Yuri!!! on Ice, was not. So it's not BL. It's as simple as that. "Oh but it's gay!!!!!" And? That's simply not how this works in Japan. |

breaking news: gay people aren't a genre. in this show, amidst all the straight sex and romance, frankly i wouldn't even call those few kisses anything other than really aggressive queerbait, for the sheer reason that the context behind them is nothing more than fairy magic which they cast the same way regardless of gender. you may argue that ranmaru used to have romantic feelings for sirius, but those feelings are as irrelevant in the plot as it gets, and we literally only find out about them in the last episode. for the comparison, the entire central conflict in aquarion evol is built around a dude who tries to take revenge on his ex boyfriend, whom he still loves, yet the show isn't tagged bl. banana fish has tons of gay sex going on, and YET it isn't bl. in devilman, ryo is literally in love with akira which is like half the reason he's doing what he's doing, and it STILL isn't bl. why? try to figure out, op. |

After finishing this show, it's clearly BL. Not tagging it as BL does a disservice to people looking for BL. And yes, this IS BL because gay romance is central to the show. And Banana Fish and Yuri on Ice are commonly considered BL, even if MAL doesn't tag it like that. Devilman isn't because Ryo is the villain and his feelings are not returned, same for Aquarion. Just having a gay ship does not make a show BL, but the MC being in love with a dude and their romance driving the plot does. |

I'm not sure why I didn't clarify in my original post (very unlike me) but I was referring to English usage of the words. Much like pretty much every Japanese word used for categorising media, the Japanese usage and English usage are completely different. In Japan yaoi and BL are interchangeable, though BL/Shounen Ai is used a lot more. Much like the misuse of the words bara, hentai and ecchi, it's easier just to go with what English fans know when talking to them. |

Late to this, but i do kind of wish it went full BL, it had nice teases, and I guess some of the dudes did like each other (Jyuka clearly having a crush on Ranmaru), maybe Homura, but it could be argued he like Sirius did have a crush on some girl. sad. |

No...? Gay characters existing in a show doesn't make the show BL. That's like saying every anime with a male protag is an action or every anime with a love interest is a romance.
@Salty-GB lol that's the dumbest thing I've read today. Someone actually saying having several sets of male characters making out doesn't deserve the boys love tag. Well then wtf would??? Another person so dead set in their "You don't like dude on dude content, so you are homophobic and wrong, now I'll ignore common sense and reality and say something ridiculous like men kissing each other isn't the definition of gay and why a boys love tag even exists, all in an attempt to prove this random individual is wrong. |

@Foreall908 My entire argument is that gay content =/= BL, dipshit. Learn to read before leaving a brain-dead comment. A story with gay characters isn't a gay story, much like a story with romance isn't necessarily part of the romance genre or a story with comedic elements being a comedy. A BL story is a story that focuses on one or more gay romances as the main plot element. It can be a combination of other genres as well, but 2 dudes kissing does not make something BL. Every fuckin SJ anime has a goddamn gay kiss at some point yet I don't see you arguing for them to be labelled as BL. Personally I don't really give a shit if you like gay people or not, but you are just straight up wrong. Grow up, learn to read and stop necroing posts from over 2 years ago. Weirdo. |
