This style looks so emotionless and cartoonish, I feel like it doesn’t fit the theme of the anime at all.
I feel like cloverworks did a way better job

These OVAs are not an adaptation of the manga/continuation of the anime. It’s of the webcomic.

The webcomic is the one written & illustrated by HERO. The manga was then illustrated by Daisuke Hagiwara. They both have different art styles to begin with :)

but i’ll probably remember over and over again

The style is much simpler but I like how this adaptation is less emotional and more serious, it gives the impression of something realistic and natural, I'm more imbued with this atmosphere.

I felt that the style of the OVA was actually more emotional than the TV show's. There's a certain weight and deft to the characters and a kind of subtle nuance that I don't think is present in the show. Not to mention I think the direction of the OVA is a lot more serious and down to earth as if I'm watching a very real relationship between two people whereas the TV show watches much more like the stereotypical anime romance.

Really excited for new episodes of the OVA.

quite frankly, the first four episodes, are horrid. 'Ex ARM' is worse, many of the seasons of 'Seven Deadly Sins' are worse. there's lots of hentai out there worse than these first four episodes. here's my American comparison of something better than this? Squidbillies is better animation and character design than these four episodes.

but, to have THAT high Yen actors paychecks for THIS amateurish film-school level of character design, animation quality, and overall 'visual impact'? seriously, this project should have never come about because it is a travesty and an insult to both the web manga, the print manga, and the Cloverworks anime.

i really don't care how old this OVA is. i don't give a hoot if the web version was drawn and written by somebody different than the print version. in Japan OVAs are physical disks you buy online or in a store. i've seen 'Strike The Blood' disks in their commercials priced at like 1,800 Yen and each one has two or three 24minute episodes of TV quality work on them. right now, 1,800 Yen is $16.48 US. at a $7.25 an hour minimum wage job that's ... 2 hours and 16 minutes worth of work before taxes etc. would you work for 2 1/4 HOURS to buy these OVAs?

i wouldn't.
just an ol school American otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.

They both have their strengths. I watched these after the CloverWorks anime was announced because I was so excited and impatient. I ended up loving them a lot. I love the style. It's simple and sorta reminds me of the Sunday Funnies like Calvin and Hobbs. The CloverWorks show was a bit too dramatic at times. I liked these voice actors more and thought they fit the characters better in the OVA's. I of course haven't read the web manga or One Punchman style adaptation of it. Halfway through the CloverWorks show they started hoping from character to character with little mini backstory/character highlight episodes, I felt like it killed the pacing. They were trying to add stuff that was probably better paced in the manga. Take Yanagi for example. What even was his character? He likes Yuki and then just drops it and becomes friends with them all? I get that he was being used to egg on the Tooru x Yuki relationship, but still. He's so vague... Even Tanihara is developed better, and he's barely in the show. Then Miyamura is jealous of Yanagi briefly? What was that? I didn't understand his friendship with the group. It was probably better fleshed out in the manga. Anyway... I like how the OVA adaptation mostly focuses on Hori and Miyamura, who are the cutest couple. The others are great support, but don't need focus unless they are fleshed out more.

I would have loved it if the original cast and directors were used to create the CloverWorks adaptation. However that's not what happened. Style wise, while the CloverWorks art style is standard. It's lifeless in comparison to the OVAs which are enriched with the feelings that evoke "passion project".

The OVAs are simply built different. Better fit by the voice actors, and far superior directing. Not to mention that even though the OVAs adapt the original webcomic, it still manages to capture the exact same feeling you get when reading the manga. The CloverWorks adaptation however feels like a different beast. Making some things more dramatic than they need to be, and to quote someone else's words, "It watches like a stereotypical romance".
Horimiya is a nothing a burger show, that's just a fact, but it's a sweet nothing burger full of cute normies, doing cute normie activities. Paired with that, you also get the occasional dark tones reflected in some characters that keep the nuance of the story grounded.
The CloverWorks adaptation is just a flop in my eyes. Yeah they stayed true to a lot of manga panels, but they also altered scenes that were more important than those that remained loyal to the source. The mood of the show feels like a mellow dramatic romance that lost it's map upon entering the maze.
IMO the CW adaption just wasn't it chief.

Go read the manga!
