*Beware spoilers for several shows below*
I tend to watch shows again a lot. I've watched all my favorites at least 3 or 4 times. It's easy when you avoid super long shows. I like a lot of the longer Shonen anime in principle, but unless I'm there for the ride, I can’t handle the catchup. Yu Yu Hakusho is basically the only show that is as long as it is that I've watched 3 or 4 times. I like to watch dubs and subs. I usually start with sub to get the original experience and then watch the dub to see that take on the show. Subs have the benefit of having fantastic voice acting, having less vulgar language, and you don't have to wait as long with the simil-pubs. Dub are nice because not having subtitles to read frees up my focus so I can appreciate the music or other animation details I didn't notice before. Ideally I'd like to watch the show in Japanese without subs, but I'm not there yet, and considering my nerves whenever I try to take a language class, I probably won't get there any time soon. My mainstays are Comedies, Romance, Slice of Life, and light hearted stories in general. I love simple stories where morals are clear and friendship is important! I like Shoujo shows especially. They are so pure and lovely and there need to be more of them! Kimi Ni Todoke, Wotakoi (Fight me, I say it’s Shoujo), and Lovely Complex are fine examples of all my favorite qualities in an anime. I love Shoujo like, The World is Still Beautiful, Snow White With the Red Hair, and Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun (Fight me! The author is a Shoujo Mangaka!) I also like many Shonen shows. I try to avoid fan service or annoying harems if possible. Nisekoi is about as harem-y I can handle. I like Black Clover, Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, JoJo and My Hero. If it gets longer than 100 episodes then I have a hard time. Black Clover, Bleach, and My Hero I watched as they aired, so I was able to get through them. JoJo I started after Part 4 ended and I caught up. As much as some of the vulgarity and grossness of JoJo sometimes bothers me, it does have solid main casts which carry me through. Breaking the story into parts is also a fantastic way of doing things, it solves power creep issues and helps things stay fresh. I have tried Naruto a few times. I managed to about episode 80 of the original and 30 of Shippuuden. Naruto, as a character, is the worst in the original show. He gets much better in the second show. I guess the creepy paint guy freaked me out, or maybe I had Math homework, but I just dropped it Shippuuden and never picked it up again. It’s very difficult to have a rival character in a Shonen show that is likeable. Sasuke is not likeable in my opinion. I’d say Vegeta probably does it best. Bakugo is okay. I guess you could probably put Ishida is this category too. I like Yuno because he isn’t in the show that much, so he doesn’t get annoying. I complain about Naruto but like Asta?! What is this! I guess I like the fact that Asta isn’t a pervert, and is pretty dumb. He’s likeable because he’s so dumb. Also the Black Bulls are a really good group ensemble cast. Their teamwork is so much fun. That show does well including everyone in the fights and not letting the main character shoulder everything on their own. Yami is a cool and funny mentor character. A bit off topic by Black Clover has the best OP’s. My Hero is good with not having Deku do everything too. I know a lot of people don’t like Deku that much because he’s a bit of a cry baby. I like his pure heart, so he gets a pass for me. Men should be able to cry and don’t need to always be so stoic. The ensemble for My Hero is pretty good as well. Class 1-A is full of fun people (except Mineta of course, unless you have a likeable pervert, like Imadori (School Rumble), just stop.) The weakest part of My Hero is the villains. Mostly just Shigaraki. All For One is a good villain, Shigaraki is a petulant child. I’m not a fan of Yandere so Himiko doesn’t do it for me either. Everyone else is great. JuJutsu Kaisen is an exciting new show. Itadori is a great protagonist, Gojou is super cool, and Nobura and Megumi are fun too. This show has really great female characters. They look like normal human beings! None of this moe nonsense! Very little fan-service. It’s great! Sukuna is really interesting and intimidating. I really like Miwa for some reason? What does that say about my personality? Mahito is the bane of my existence. He’s so gross, and what he does to people disgusts me and makes me really sad. Anyway, good show. Mob Psycho is fantastic. Reigen is amazing. So many likeable characters and cool antagonists. Great fights too. ONE is good at that, or at least the animation companies doing his stuff are. One Punch man is also great. Another great cast. Despite its parody nature it is also a really cool fighting show. The Manga is top notch. I am absolutely in love with Astra Lost in Space. Fantastic cast, great OP and ED, short and sweet, satisfying ending, friendship! So good. Sket Dance is cool too. I hope Witch Watch goes for a long time! Hang in there Shinohara-Sensei! Blast of Tempest is such a gripping show that I finished it in one sitting after starting it at like 8 pm. Great characters and Shakespeare! The magic system is really cool and interesting. The shoujo-eqse crush with Hakaze is cute and fun. The ending is satisfying. The first OP is amazing! Fullmetal is the GOAT of course. If you haven’t watched it please do so. I like Demon Slayer. Great animation and characters. The movie was amazing. I know a lot of people give it flack, don’t listen to the haters. There are a few shows that have to be watched as a dub. Even if you love subs, watch that first and then come back for the dub. There is a whole page that talks about this on tvtroupes. (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/SugarWiki/SuperlativeDubbing) Anyway, mine are Fullmetal Alchemist, School Rumble, Baccano, Tears to Tiara, Cromartie High School, and Yu Yu Hakusho. Dubs are better for shows where the language the characters are speaking in reality probably shouldn’t be Japanese. Fullmetal Alchemist and Baccano are prime examples of this, (though in Fullmetal they would probably be speaking German or another European language, and characters like Ling and Mei would be speaking Chinese). . I like the Astra Dub because the canon language of the show is English. (Is Polina’s accent bad? I haven’t heard enough Russians accents. American voice actors/actors in general constantly get flack for doing accents poorly. It’s hard to spot a good accent. I often just assume it’s bad.) The Yu Yu Hakusho dub is just really funny and does well with the liberties it took. Comedies are often better with dubs because the jokes are tweaked to American/English speaker sensibilities. For how much I identify as a Shoujo man at heart I sure have had a lot to say about these Shonen shows. Month Girls Nokazi Kun is hilarious. I read the manga over and over again, and Oresama teacher is fantastic too. Most of the manga I read is comedy, like Wotakoi and Komi-San. I really loved Berserk when I was younger. I wish is was less violent and pornographic. I love Guts and Co. so much though. After the Conviction Arc the manga is completely amazing and I have very little to say against it. Of course the Golden Age Arc is fantastic, that goes without saying. If the terrible 2016 anime did anything, it brought more music to Berserk’s beautiful world it gave voices to characters I love, especially Schierke. It is sad how slowly the manga comes out. Manga creation really takes it out of our Mangaka friends. Something needs to be done about that. (RIP Miura) Spy x Family is a treat. I hope the inevitable anime does it justice. Kaguya-Sama Love is War is really good. Super funny and cute. The narrator, in his little lore tidbits, sometimes says things and makes claims I don’t agree with, but the characters are great. The Anime is very well done, especially season 2. My favorite Isekai is Re:Zero, followed by Log Horizon and Shield Hero. The music and OP’s and ED’s in Re:Zero are top notch. The Animation quality and lengths of the episodes are very impressive. The story is great and despite the many complaints that have been made against Subaru, I really like him. He’s a real person, unlike a certain wannabe “Black Swordsman” I know. Rem is a concern. I would probably like her more if the fandom wasn’t so divisive about her and Emilia. I’m in the Emelia camp of course. It’s interesting that the author basically killed Rem off. I wonder if that was in response the fandom wars or his Suburu like love for silver haired heroines. (#AuthorBias #RukiaxIchigo #StoriesEvolveKuboSensei) I like the “Who is Rem?” meme in moderation. I kind of wish the light novel artist would have been someone else. I love the character design, don’t get me wrong, I just feel sometimes that the cute characters don’t fit the tone of the story. It has a similar disconnect that you get for Made in Abyss. Isn’t it fun to watch cute characters have horrible things happen to them!? (No! It’s weird!) Log Horizon is carried by its fantastic cast, its fun politics, its interesting world, and its great music, OP’s and ED’s. For Shield Hero I really like the world and Naoafumi. I’m scared of a possible harem development! You can have male members in your adventuring party too! Subaru has Otto and Garfiel! We will see how things turn out. Bookworm is super fun. Great main character and supporting cast. Economics and trade! Heartwarming and educational! Overlord is okay. Some of it is needlessly dark. I like parts like when Sebas and a human fall in love or when Enri adventures with her goblin army. (The Lizard Man Arc never happened). The arc where that adventuring party raids the tomb is particularly gratuitous. Here’s an idea! Let’s fill this party with interesting and sympathetic characters! Next let’s have them get brutally murdered for little to no reason! Ains goes on about them invading his tomb, but he practically forced them too. Stuff like this happens a few too many times in this show. Slime is fine. I like the other worlder characters the best. Mostly Rimuru’s students. They’re great. (My love for slice of life is showing.) It has and interesting world and is fun. Not too dark, which is nice. (Shion and the others should have stayed dead, change my mind.) I’ve been liking the spider show. It’s getting pretty dramatic. Sword Art Online has its moments. It has one good arc per season. Season 1, Aincrad Arc. Season 2, Excalibur Arc. Season 3 some of the stuff with Eugeo was good. I liked the beginning when they were kids and parts of the tower. After that it gets pretty bad. Harems! Fighting a naked villain! Why!? The author is really bad and making appealing villains. Doctor Stone is really fun. It feels like you’re watching a cartoon version of Bill Nye or Myth Busters. The characters are so fun. Senku and Gin are the most likable for me. Kohaku is pretty great too. Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 are both really good. The games are great too, especially the elite versions. I’m really excited for Steins;Gate 0 Elite. Let’s hope they don’t butcher the live action Hollywood show, if it every gets made that is. If you want to watch it you might have to suffer through the first 4 or so episodes of the first series. I dropped it for a year after my first try. It gets much better. Okabe and his voice actor takes some getting used to. I love him now, but that took some work and recognition of his voice actor’s other great characters, Like Ryuuji in Persona 5 (play the game) and Taichi in Chihiyafuru (I’m Tachi x Chihaya btw). His dub actor is a bit less annoying. The Dub is good, but the dubbers change the references the characters are making. They reference things like Star Trek and Rick Rolling instead of Japanese memes. I can understand this for the Japanese internet memes, like Null-po which still makes no sense to me. But some of the changes weren’t necessary for anime fans especially because a lot of the references are from anime like Death Note and JoJo. JoJo was virtually unknown in the West at the time of the Dub, so I can forgive that I suppose… Grudgingly. The Sub is infected by this strange meme-ory as well. That is why the Elite versions are the best, it uses the original references and explains them for you plus all the animation from the original is used. Hurrah! Now I know 2011 Japanese memes! Kurisu is best girl, and Maho is a close second. She is the best part of Steins;Gate 0. Some Fantastic Comedy Anime I haven’t mentioned yet: The Disastrous Life of Saiki K, Sket Dance, Working!/Wagnaria, Servant x Service, Cromartie HighSchool, The Art Club Has a Problem, Tanaka is Always Listless, Miname-ke (Season 1 and 4, you can skip 2 and 3), Hinamatsuri, Nichjou, Nichi-bros (Daily Life of HighSchool Boys), and I’d say KonoSuba, but all the funny gags are constantly overshadowed by the obnoxious ecchi. Still a really funny show. Some other shows/movies that are fantastic: Chihayafuru, Kono oto Tomare!, A Silent Voice, Your Name, Weathering With You, Silver Spoon, Barakamon, and Yona of the Dawn. You can look at my stats for the rest. I don’t like voting too low unless the show disgusted me. That doesn’t happen too often because I try to be pretty discerning before I watch a show. What disgusts me? Fan Service, obnoxious tropes (like woman being terrible at cooking), incest, loli’s, harems, etc… etc… I am partial to Tsunderes. Perhaps because I am one at heart? Perhaps I find their embarrassment and sincerity endearing. Who can say? Characters are important to me, if they are annoying or unlikeable than I can’t handle a show. Plots can be dumb as long as you have good characters. I don’t care about clichés as long as the characters are likeable. This is starting to get long. Anyway, if you end up reading this I hope you have a wonderful day and hang in there. Take things one step at a time and realize it is normal for things to suck sometimes. Our bodies are designed to feel negative emotions, that how our monkey brains evolved to survive. Acknowledge the monkey. Don’t let it carry you away but also don’t ignore it. #mindfulness |
